Songs That Make You Cry.

What are some rock songs that will always bring a tear to your eyes?

For me it’s:

December 13th, 2017

I have a whole Spotify playlist comprised solely of sad songs from some of my favorite bands. Most Alice in Chains (especially the Jar of Flies EP) and Woods of Ypres can get at least a tear out of me (or a lot more than one if I’m already feeling like shit to begin with). Here are some select chocies:

And for a different reason, these two can make me cry really easily, not necessarily because they sound sad (although they do in some sections), but the story behind them is really sad:

That first song was written by the guitarist Tom Searle (as were many Architects songs). He had cancer and at that point in time knew he was going to die soon. Just reading those lyrics, knowing they were coming from a man coming to accept the terms of his impending death, it’s really emotionally heavy. The second song there just came out this year, and it’s the first song Architects released after Tom passed away. It was the last song he worked on before he passed, and the rest of the band completed it after his passing and this was the end result… it’s very touching and hard not to cry hearing his bandmates sing their final farewell to their close friend.

If a song has something to do with the Gallaghers bros then it has potential to bring tears to my eyes at some point.

@louiedro

Creep is a fucking good one! I heard this song in 2006/2007 because I knew that Chester liked STP.

(God can’t believe that Scott, Chris and Chester are not longer with us).

Youngblood – Wage War

It’s a song about an early fan when the band was trying to find their footing, who decided when “he was almost seventeen decided life wasn’t worth living”. The song was written in memory of him. I had a classmate in high school who a few months before the song came out, decided when she was almost seventeen decided life wasn’t worth living. So, the song makes me sad reminding me of her whenever I hear it.

Eiley – Too Close To Touch
White Light – The Ghost Inside

Both about their respective frontmen dealing with the aftermath of their younger siblings dying.

C.A.N.C.E.R. – Architects
Memento Mori – Architects

Mentioned in a post above, Architects lead guitarist and primary songwriter, Tom Searle died of cancer in August 2016. Memento Mori is the final song on their most recent album, which was the final album to feature Tom before his death. In Latin, Memento Mori translates to “remember that you must die”.

For a different than normal reason:

Talking Tragedy – Stray From The Path
Wide Eyed (cover) – Crystal Lake

Talking Tragedy was a song Stray wrote shortly after The Ghost Inside’s fatal bus crash in late 2015. Stray and TGI are friends who go back to when they both young bands. Crystal Lake was one of the bands who played on TGI’s first Japanese tour (TGI is American and Crystal Lake is Japanese) the song is a cover of a song off of TGI’s most recent album. That bus crash killed two people and left the band with a multitude of injuries, ranging from cuts and bruises to amputations. It’s been a long 2 years of recovering for them (hopefully, 2018 is their year).

Pray to You Now by The White Buffalo

Wharf Rat by the Grateful Dead

Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce (not much of a rock song, but especially in context with his life, I feel like it fits)

Call of the Void by Rail Yard Ghosts (also not exactly rock but coming from a slight extreme metal sort of background)

Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd – specifically the live version from Southern by the Grace of God

The Beatles – She’s Leaving Home, The Long and Winding Road
Oasis – Slide Away, Sunday Morning Call, Falling Down

I forgot the saddest thing to do. Listening to Lovelife(song) by Lush and reading about their drummer, Chris Acland, commited suicide.
