Women on Genius: Artist Spotlights - Lana Del Rey

Banner designed by the great @jambi

In the very first Women Artist Spotlight, @charityspicer said the following:

I created this initiative with hopes of shining light on under-the-radar and also well-acclaimed women who have dominated and revolutionized the music industry in extraordinary ways.

Well, ladies and gentlemen today, I bring you the cream of the crop when it comes to well-established women in the music industry. I present, the great Lana Del Rey!

Lana Del Rey makes music that I wouldn’t necessarily gravitate towards that being pop-alternative songs with a focus on smooth and clean singing vocals. It’s unfortunate that I brushed off her music so early on without actually taking a listen because I can clearly appreciate the genre and Lana’s contributions to it. I only gave her a proper listen when a girl I knew pressured me into listening and analyzing her songs. At first, I wasn’t impressed but as I got into some newer songs of hers, I started to enjoy the music and feel for her passionate lyrics.

Lana Del Rey, whose real name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, started her path to music stardom in 2003 when she first performed in New York clubs. At the time, she used ‘May Jailer’ as her stage name which would be used for her first few demo tapes in the years following the start of her career. Yet, it’s only in January 2007 that we would get our first taste of a ‘Lizzy Grant’—yet another one of her many aliases—project and it came in the form of an EP: The Phenomena of Lizzy Grant. She would add another EP to her long catalogue the following year.

After taking a well-needed break, Lana came back with her Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant album in January 2010. Although the album is very appreciated by fans today, the project was pulled off the shelves quite early after its release. Unfortunately, the independent record label that signed Del Rey while she was still attending university, 5 Point Records, didn’t have the money required to properly fund the album. In 2012, the artist claimed that she would make the album available. To this day, Lana Del Rey’s self-titled album has yet to be added to streaming platforms.

In 2011, Lana got what she hoped for: a glimpse at mainstream success and that came in the form of “Video Games” (which is her sixth most popular song on Genius today!). The song went viral on YouTube and served as a perfect segue into the singer’s next big plan: Born To Die. Released on January 27, 2012, this album propelled Lana into stardom and eventually counted over one million sales!

Through 2013, Lana released a couple of singles and went on her ‘Paradise Tour’ which lasted most of 2013 and 2014. Yet, when an artist comes out with a great album, the fans always wait for the follow-up. And when the fans asked to deliver, Lana Del Rey delivered, she delivered. Her sophomore album, Ultraviolence, sold 182,000 copies in the first week, was well received by critics and charmed fans all around the globe.

2015 was another important year in the singer’s career. Lana went on another tour—The Endless Summer Tour—as well as releasing her next album in September, [Honeymoon]. She followed up on that record in 2017 where she dropped her fifth album, Lust for Life, on which she invited notorious guests such as The Hills, Artist Archive: Lana Del Rey. The album included notable songs such as “Love”, the eponymous track and “Summer Bummer” alongside Rocky and Carti.

2019 saw the singer release her sixth album, Norman Fucking Rockwell. The album follows the story of Norman Rockwell, a great artist who is very self-absorbed. More recently, Lana released two albums in 2021: Chemtrails Over The Country Road and Blue Banisters. Chemtrails landed at number one the week of its release whilst the latter didn’t perform as well with [33k equivalent sales] in the first week. Yet Blue Banisters granted her the record for most number one albums in the ‘Alternative’ category.

Now that we have gone in-depth into LDR’s discography, here are a couple of songs from her I recommend:

The song’s name is about a conspiracy, the instruments are calming and Lana sounds amazing and hits every note, what else do you need? To keep it serious, Lana tells a love tale like none other on this smooth guitar ballad with amazing vocals throughout. The second verse along with the artist’s angelic chorus makes this track my favourite from Lana Del Rey’s catalogue.

From her most recent project, “Cherry Blossom” is a song I had the chance to translate [into French] near the release of the project. I was immediately struck by the very emotional lyrics and the song was even better. In this masterpiece, Lana sings about her hopes for an eventual daughter. As the song progresses, the lyrics get deeper and deeper and, at the height of the song, the singer cites the name she wishes for her child: Angelina. Don’t tell me that’s not beautiful.

A classic LDR song. It’s currently sitting behind [“Summertime Sadness”] as the second most popular on Genius' Born To Die pages. “Born To Die” is a song with a lot more rhythm to it than the previous two and we have yet another stellar vocal performance—that we come to expect from her—from Lana

I remember reading the chorus on Genius and thinking “Hmm, I’ll annotate that, it seems interesting.” I came back to the page 15 minutes after my break and saw the annotation was already made. Anyways, I love the imagery that is being elaborated upon throughout the song. Lana paints herself as a map of Los Angeles, a very important city to LDR. Sonically, we have yet another soft ballad with a slight melancholic undertone and I think you guys already know what I would say to describe her vocals at this point.

Undoubtedly her most popular song, “Summertime Sadness” isn’t actually that sad, well not sonically. The song has tambourines that slowly build up in the back up until they explode into this colourful chorus. Lana’s voice also follows this pattern with her flow slowly speeding up as we advance further into the song’s format.

Thank you very much for reading through this very long thread. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed reading @charityspicer’s thread on Lizzy McAlpine. I’m sorry for being late, this week was hell but eh, I’m alive so that’s good. If you want to participate in this initiative, make sure to fill out this form and @charityspicer will reach out to you. You can also check out the introductory thread for more info about this series. Make sure to tune in next week for @ssaadec10’s thread!

@LGF Beautiful thread man. I also was skeptical about Lana, mostly because of the cherry cola thing. But then @themayjailer got me into it. Have to say it was one of the biggest pleasant surprises I’ve found. Some tracks I’d recommend are “Tomorrow Never Came” (Sean Lennon!!) and “Fuck it I love you”. I’ve heard 3 albums, I need to catch up.

I had the same experience, brushed off her music early on due to the sad girl from aesthetic I just figured she was all aesthetic no substance but boy was I wrong.

She’s an all time great and truly puts herself on display in a genuine way, one of the best writers in music.

All great song picks but If I had to pick some songs that show off her genius I’d go

  • Tropico short film
(It’s 3 songs but the short film is filled with symbolism and entendres, lyrically and visually dense. Body electric, Gods and monsters, and belair are 3 songs featured in the short film)

  • Off to the races

a genuine banger, the baby doll voice is elite. Young sugar baby LDR is too iconic

  • Venice B^%#H

Nearly 10 minutes of bliss, I could listen to this forever.

  • Heroin/change/Get free

The last 3 songs on Lust for Life could be an EP on their own. They are genuine inspiring and highlight how beautiful and powerful human beings are when we are genuine and honest with ourselves. I appreciate her for these words

  • Young and beautiful

Iconic.

  • Sad girl from Ultraviolence

Legendary, from production to words to story telling to emotion. She knocks it out the park

  • White dress from chemtrails

Only she can make this, I love it.

Also

notorious guests like The Hills

Lmao that was funny. Dope post tho

I love “Summertime Sadness.” The melancholic beats are a vibe. Unfortunately, that’s all I can recommend from her, as I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to her more.

Just finished Blue Bannisters. One of the most astonishing things about Lana is how consistent her discography is, in both quality and artistic integrity. It’s comparable to Kate Bush.

February 7th, 2022

great article, @LGF! thanks for volunteering to write about another outstanding woman who’s influenced so many in the industry. I have only listened to a couple of her albums but this is another reminder for me to listen more to her discography cohesively…

February 7th, 2022

I was obsessed with Lana Del Rey after hearing a few of her songs that featured in The Great Gatsby, but stopped listening a couple years later when the sad vibes made me sad, too, lol…didn’t listen to another one of her albums until last year and she’s still killing it. Really enjoyed “White Dress” off of Chemtrails… in particular.
