Ghost's 'Impera' Album | First Thoughts?

Hey everyone! Ghost just released their newest album last Friday, titled ‘Impera’! Coming in a little while after their 2018 album ‘Prequelle’, it clocks in at just over 46 minutes, and I’d like everyone’s first thoughts on it!

You might love Ghost, or you might hate them, but since 2010 they’ve been releasing albums with a nice dose of hard rock, heavy metal, and theatric influences – as well as a good helping of Satan worship. They’re a great band in my opinion, even if they’re not one of the ‘heaviest’.

Impera is a nice, short album that ever so slightly changes directions for Ghost. Going for a more arena-sized sound, there are plenty of killer choruses, and refrains all over the album, from Call Me Little Sunshine, to Hunter’s Moon, and my favorite song, Twenties. The album also vaguely delves into some of the more recent developments going on, like in Kaisarion and once again, Twenties.

Overall, Impera is a great addition to the Ghost catalogue. I think I’d have it as their second best album, after my personal favorite, Prequelle. They haven’t released a bad record yet, and I hope to continue seeing them release more!

But those are my thoughts! What do you all think about this new Ghost record?

Excellent post. I’ll have to give this one a try.

@AntimonyOrchid Thanks! I will say, if you tried Ghost before and weren’t a fan, this one isn’t likely to change any minds. But, who knows?

I’m only familiar with “Rats” and the one with a hammer in the title. To use a clever thing I read in a magazine talking about a different band, they put the Abba in Black Sabbath.
BTW: Song titles go in “” not italics

Square Hammer! And yeah, I’d say that’s pretty close. I would say they’re like a modern-day Blue Oyster Cult. Not exactly a black-and-white comparison, but I’ve heard that one used too.

I spent the weekend listening to Impera via Spotify on the telly and my first reaction was “Eh”.
I really loved the three singles “Hunter’s Moon”, “Call Me Little Sunshine” and “Twenties”, so I was a bit underwhelmed by the rest of the tracks.

Today, during my commute to work, I listened to the album in its entirety on headphones and I absolutely love it. The instrumentals and the sometimes cheesy lyrics, I’m looking at you “I’m your rock, baby” and “We’ll be grabbing ‘em all by the hoohaas”, are hilariously perfect, and Papa sounds just as good as the other Papas. (I know, I know)

I started my Ghoulish journey with Prequelle, and that is still my favorite album, but Impera is absolutely worth the listen.
I’m really looking forward to some live versions at the show in April, the tiny-tiny album release concert was a great tour teaser.

Haven’t listened to that yet lol
