Well, it’s more a review of a random Tom MacDonald song for a server where we do a song reviewing game. Just happens to be long as an essay.
Another inarticulate flurry of even-more-bad-faith-than-average right-wing talking points, delivered uninterestingly, put over a generic beat, and held together with the flattest hook imaginable. This also happens to describe the three Tom MacDonald songs that have actually charted.
It’s hard to actually get triggered by anything he says, because before you can digest one ridiculously bad-faith talking point, he’s already moved on to something completely unrelated. There’s no connective tissue keeping these ideas together at all.
It makes you wonder how successful he could be if he had even the smallest sliver of talent. And I even wonder if the musical aspects of the songs are bad on purpose so as to better achieve the ultimate goal of getting attention through triggering the normies. Because as it stands he makes people like NF or Masked Wolf sound like absolute maestros.
It’s a worthwhile exercise to imagine how we would feel about a left-wing version of Tom MacDonald. It’s easy to see that they would be an embarrassment and a detriment to their cause. Whether people like Tom MacDonald are a detriment to their own cause is too big of a question for me to answer right here.
Ultimately, Tom MacDonald fits every criteria of a grifter. It doesn’t matter what percentage of his music is genuine and what percentage of it is “just trolling”. He profits off of amplifying willfully ignorant and prejudiced sentiments that are genuinely held by many, and cause real harm to real people. His songs are banally evil. I can’t imagine I’ll find anything worse on this playlist.
However, from a meta perspective, it’s also worth noting that Tom MacDonald’s existence has provided plenty of entertaining discussion. He’s a perfect fit for the role of the universally hated artist. Music enthusiasts like us, who learned about him against our will, will never forget him.
