Songs written in one sitting.

I’ve seen a lot of comments refuting the idea that certain songs have a certain meaning value because they were written in one sitting. ex: “stairway to heaven”
If an artist writes a song in one sitting That certainly does not make it shallow.
Our brains are unbelievably complex and the subconscious plays a HUGE role in the threading of our thoughts and words. In my eyes some of the artists who create songs impulsively in this manner are adding even MORE meaning to their work because (depending on the magnitude of their soul) stream of consciousness can link together thoughts and ideas floating in the back of your mind that you are not presently aware of.
People have refuted meaning in Radiohead because he reportedly “fished” for words using the Dadaist method.
Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes has stated before that he just lets everything he has learned swirl around in his subconscious and come out his pen; his songs are some of the most complex and meaningful i’ve ever heard.

Does anyone have a thought on the matter?

It’s funny you mention Radiohead, whenever this topic comes up I always think about how Planet Telex was written when they were all belligerently drunk.

Hm, don’t really know about songs but I think Coleridge wrote a few of his poems in one sitting right after he woke up or when he was on opium, and Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 pretty quickly (less than 2 weeks).

As far as I know, St. Vincent said she wrote the first part of her new song Huey Newton in 5 minutes.

I know that two songwriters wrote and maybe even made the demo for Umbrella within an hour. That worked out for them.

I don’t really understand what you’re getting at, as you seem to contradict yourself but almost every Tom Petty song was written in one sitting. Won’t Back Down and Runnin' Down a Dream were apparently written simultaneously within a 10 minute window. That’s pretty damn impressive.

How did i in any way contradict myself?

Stan Rogers wrote numerous songs in one sitting, including the standard “Barrett’s Privateers,” which he wrote backstage at a festival gig in about 20 minutes because he “needed something manly to close off the set,” and “The Mary Ellen Carter,” which he said “wrote itself”

To be clear: these are two of the greatest songs ever crafted by the hand of man
