Thin White Lies Lyrics

[Verse 1: Luke]
I don't feel your love
But I don't ask too many questions
The words, they are too much
When you show me my reflection

[Pre-Chorus: Luke, Luke & Ashton, All]
When the sun goes down, we all get lonely
Watch me as I disappear

These empty sounds and endless stories
So tell me what I wanna hear (Thin white lies)

[Chorus: Luke & Ashton, All]
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
Callin' my name, I don't wanna stay
But I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake (Thin white lies)
Just one more taste of you, my love (Thin white lies)
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah

[Verse 2: Luke]
You never call me out
You know exactly where I'm goin'
You got me by the mouth
She said she love me, she don't show it

[Pre-Chorus: Luke, Luke & Ashton, All]
When the sun goes down, we all get lonely
Watch me as I disappear

These empty sounds and endless stories
So tell me what I wanna hear (Thin white lies)

[Chorus: Luke & Ashton, All]
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
Callin' my name, I don't wanna stay
But I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake (Thin white lies)
Just one more taste of you, my love (Thin white lies)
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah

[Bridge: Luke, Luke & Calum, All]
I don't think I like me anymore
Can someone tell me who I was before?

I don't really like me anymore
Anymore, anymore (Thin white lies)

[Chorus: Luke & Ashton, All]
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
Callin' my name, I don't wanna stay
But I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake (Thin white lies)
Just one more taste of you, my love (Thin white lies)
Killin' me slow with the words you wrote
The heart you broke, the heart you broke, yeah
[Post-Chorus: All]
(Thin white lies)

[Outro: Luke]
I don't think I like me anymore
Can someone tell me who I was before?
I don't really like me anymore
Anymore

I love the groove in the chorus. We were going for a Cure thing on the guitar in the verses. My favorite lyric in it is “I don’t think I like me anymore.” It’s so honest, when you get to a point that you feel like a stranger to yourself—I like how this song captures that moment.

On a March 2021 Instagram livestream, drummer Ashton Irwin explained:

This song is totally deliberative of The Cure. For those that know my songwriting, I love The Cure, they’ve massively influenced my songwriting, mood, aesthetic and everything I go for graphically. I’ve always just wanted to be in a band that has a cult following, we listen to this music and we create this journey together that’s important to us, and we document our lives together through our music and our lyrics. So Thin White Lies is, stylistically, one of my favourite songs and is linking back to our earlier songs, like “No Shame”, “Easier” and “Teeth”, I think it goes in the same bucket.
