Autumn
Nicole Zefanya Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I carved my name into your ribcage
We talked of lands away from this cage
You said, don't fret love
Someday ill be my own man
I'll be free
Oohhh
Oh but darling did you mean
Darling, did you mean free from me?

You promised home

The kind I've never known
O

Overall Meaning

In Nicole Zefanya's song Autumn, the opening line "I carved my name into your ribcage" is symbolic of the pain that the singer bears in their relationship with their lover. The image of carving one's name into another's ribcage is a violent one, suggesting that the singer's love for their partner has become almost possessive. The following line "We talked of lands away from this cage" suggests a desire for escape, and perhaps also hints at the idea of escaping from the "cage" of their relationship. The partner's response, "don't fret love, someday I'll be my own man, I'll be free" suggests that he is also feeling trapped, and is perhaps also looking for a way out of the relationship.

The chorus of the song, with the line "But darling did you mean, darling did you mean free from me?" suggests that the singer is questioning their partner's intentions, and whether or not he truly wants to be free from their relationship, or just free from them. The verse "You promised home, the kind I've never known" suggests that the relationship promised a sense of belonging and home for the singer, but that this has not been fulfilled.

Overall, the lyrics of Autumn explore the themes of possession, control, and escape, depicting a relationship that is suffocating for both parties involved.

i like this sadder and carefree version but there’s just something with the 2022 version. it serves the feeling of being somewhere, with someone who promised you everything and all but yet, you still feel so alone in the big city. it’s upbeat but its like literally walking along the streets, haunted by the person who let you down so hard. now, there’s nowhere to run to.
