MAGGIE
B.A. Robertson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maggie, she knows the kings of France,
but Maggie declines to dance.
She won't work in a factory,
her parents think she should.
She's inclined academically,
and so far its so good.

Maggie won't be a teenage bride.
Maggie against the tide,
she accepts the adversity,
she always knew she could.
To attend university,
and so far its so good.

She's into Rigoletto,
she's into Zubin Mehta.
She knows that Canaletto,
he's no painter decorator.
With due consideration,
to further education.

She's rebel of sorts,
she's a rebel of course,
She's a rebel on a level,
there's an oh and then a me and then oh ---

Maggie, she likes to have some fun.
But Maggie won't fool around,
that old lesson's just teasing, yet,
it's humoresque with you,
the sensation is pleasing yet,
she only humours you.

Maggie so far, so far so good.
Maggie so far, so far so good.

She's a rebel of course,
she's a rebel of sorts,
she's a rebel on a level,
there's a oh and then a me and then oh ---

Maggie don't like the things I like.
So Maggie, upon my bike,
I thought Milton and Burns and Keats,
were Scotland's midfield men.
When I learn I won't be for keeps
I'm hanging up my pen.

Maggie so far, so far so good.
Maggie so far, so far so good.

Maggie.

Overall Meaning

Maggie is unapologetically herself and is happy to steer her own course, even if it means going against societal expectations.

Great song from a wonderful TV series that gave one the feeling of submerging into a nice warm bath.

@rentaghost37

Thanks for posting this. I have not heard it since the programme was last shown and all i can remember of the opening credits was a girl "Maggie" jumping off a swing. Great song.

@damiangriffiths7801

I remember this TV series. The tune was very memorable, although unfortunately unlike some of the contributors here, it does not fill me with joy. In fact I associate it with the very beginning of my teenage years, when hormones combined with a growing awareness of my predicament as an individual who would one day be making adult choices, to foster a sense of depressive anxiety which ultimately manifested itself as a kind of relentless unease which has remained with me ever since. Thankfully today this feeling is more like a kind of background hum which I can live with. I have even given up drinking recently, which was what I used to do to dispel it. At times it erupts in tearfulness when I watch films where people confront unfulfilment, such as The Age of Innocence, Withnail and I, or Avengers: Endgame, or alternatively, in a form of deep nostalgic longing provoked by films such as Wish you were here or the music of Vaughn Williams. However, for the most part, it is like a dormant volcano. I mean really dormant, like one on Mars, or something like that. However, I think it all began with the theme tune of this tv series, the dreary Bill/littlest hobo style production values, and Maggie on that swing.

@duncanpriestley964

So... mixed feelings eh?

@douglasfreeman3229

Sorry to read about your difficulties. I am glad you can keep it in the background now. I had this feeling of relentless unease too, as I went through puberty in the early/mid 80s and I ended up being treated for anxiety disorders. Try to keep your head up and do the things you enjoy and really love them. There is a kinship between people who have suffered mental unease and we are all together "in spirit".

@joannemcdonald7572

Oh i loved this show and still had the tune in my head!
