Bachelorette
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a fountain of blood
In the shape of a girl
You're the bird on the brim
Hypnotized by the Whirl

Drink me, make me feel real
Wet your beak in the stream
Game we're playing is life
Love is a two way dream

Leave me now, return tonight
Tide will show you the way
If you forget my name
You will go astray
Like a killer whale
Trapped in a bay

I'm a path of cinders
Burning under your feet
You're the one who walks me
I'm your one way street

I'm a whisper in water
Secret for you to hear
You are the one who grows distant
When I beckon you near

Leave me now, return tonight
The tide will show you the way
If you forget my name
You will go astray
Like a killer whale
Trapped in a bay

I'm a tree that grows hearts
One for each that you take
You're the intruder hand

I'm the branch that you break
Hum-yeah!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Björk's song Bachelorette showcase the theme of power dynamics in relationships. In the opening lines, she refers to herself as a "fountain of blood" in the shape of a girl, suggesting that she is intense and emotional. Meanwhile, the person she is addressing is "the bird on the brim," who is hypnotized by her energy. The lyrics continue to reference a game, which is life, and love as a "two-way dream." It appears that Björk is cautioning her partner against taking her for granted, warning that if he forgets her name, he will go astray, like a killer whale trapped in a bay.

In the later verses, Björk uses metaphors such as "the path of cinders" and "the tree that grows hearts" to emphasize her vulnerability, and how she is at the mercy of the person she is addressing. However, even as she acknowledges the power dynamic, Björk also asserts her own strength by describing herself as a "one-way street" and a "whisper in water" - subtle but powerful forces that cannot be ignored.

Overall, Bachelorette is a haunting and emotional exploration of the tenuous balance between power and vulnerability in romantic relationships. Through her use of vivid imagery and powerful metaphors, Björk invites the listener to consider the complex emotions that come with loving and being loved.

I remember growing up in the 90s, she was brave enough to be herself, be creative and evolve her music. Because she was being different the media/chart/music shows would completely ridicule her a LOT. When you listen to a bjork song, you honestly couldn’t tell if it was released in the 90s or right now….that’s how far ahead she was with her music. She put her critics to shame.

I don’t know where you grew up or who ypu listened back in the days but in France she was praised big time. Rightfuly so :-)

I think a lot of it comes down to being hand-picked by the industry to be allowed to be yourself; There are many creative people like Björk who get overlooked because in favour of disposable acts that bring in quick cash. The industry does not like experimentation or innovation, and only the fortunate few get to be original.

I grew up in the 90's an everydbody was absolutely IN LOVE with Bjork, she was litteraly one of the most admired artist at the time, this song in particular was everywhere. So we propbably lived in different countries :)

Really? I grew in the same era and although I seem to remember people thought she was brilliant even back then. The gossip media certainly had a field day with her, but when it comes to music I feel like Bjork has always been thought of as incredibly influential and ahead of her time. Madonna wanted to work with her. Peter Jackson wanted her to sing the end theme to the second Lord of the Rings movie. She wasn't languishing in obscurity waiting to be appreciated 30 years later, that's for sure.

I had a friend show me her videos about 6 months ago and I keep coming back to listen to her. He had thought and told me this music came out within the last few years and I believed him too. We literally thought this was new stuff. Both of us are very avid music enthusiasts too, I listen to all kinds of music.
