Wildflower
Blake Shelton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's faced the hardest times you could imagine
And many times her eyes fought back the tears
And when her youthful world was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders bore the weight of all her fears

And a sorrow no one hears
Still rings in midnight silence, in her ears
Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower growing wild

And if by chance that I should hold her
Let me hold her for a time
And if allowed just one possession
I would take her in my arms, to be mine

Be careful how you touch her, she'll awaken
As sleep's the only freedom that she knows
And when you walk into her eyes, you won't believe
The way she's always paying for a debt she never owes

And a silent wind still blows
That only she can hear, so she goes

Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild

Let her cry, oh, she's a lady
Let her dream, 'cause she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her

She's a free and gentle flower growing wild
She's a flower growing wild, she's a flower growing wild

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Blake Shelton's song "Wildflower" tell the story of a woman who has faced many challenges and struggles in life but has still retained her free and wild spirit. Despite her hardships, the woman remains strong and resilient, carrying the weight of her fears on her shoulders. The sorrow she feels is constant, even in moments of midnight silence. The singer begs the listener to let her cry, dream and be her own person, without any restraints holding her back.

The song explores the idea of respecting and cherishing a woman's freedom rather than putting her in a box or dictating her life. The woman is compared to a wildflower, growing freely and beautifully in the world, even in the most difficult situations. The chorus repeats the plea to let her cry and be free, acknowledging that she is a lady who deserves the same respect and dignity as any other person.

The lyrics are beautifully written and convey a powerful message about humanity's desire for freedom and self-expression, particularly for women. The song's message is inspiring and empowering, urging listeners to embrace their unique identities, stand up to their oppressors and fight for their freedoms.

I'm with you...
Foster couldn't get that song recorded, got rejected everywhere until they had Donny do the demo and it immediately became a huge hit.

I didn't realize that Skylark was a one hit wonder band.. Donny has a beautiful voice, I figured they had to have hit something else- but they didn't.

He also did backup vocals for Mavis Staples. That's one heck of a talent

Blake Shelton sings it like.....
Blake Shelton.

And I see some people getting choked up on here at this version, they're going to be bawling like babies if they ever listen to the original!

Nice to see someone else on here who remembers Donny

Peace!

When I was a little girl and my childhood was falling apart by my dad's heartless infidelity my mom devoted this song to me. I was so lost and trying to take care of my crushed mother at only 11 years old. I've been a caretaker of others my entire life. This song reminds me I can handle things.

I feel your heart. My mom, the love of my dad's life and my everything, took her life when I was 13. It devastated my dad to pieces. For some reason, the mighty spirit graced me with the strength, at 13, to look after my dad. Although, my dad's spirit was never the same, he gave everything he had to provide my sister and I a stable life. Like you, everyone's wellness is my priority. There's not a day that goes by that I don't wish my mom was here. But at the same time I feel so blessed for the life I have lived and the person I've become because of my circumstances. Like you, I feel I can handle anything life throws at me. Music is an amazing healer. May you always be blessed♥

I've never cried to a country song before. This is a masterpiece.

@TheFoolintherainn

Listen to the Donny Gerrard version lead singer of Skylark

That version will have you bawling!

@theoriginaldab

Then there's a lot of country music you've never listened to since this is the first and only time you've cried to a country song... There are a hell of a lot of year jerkers on country music... George Jones WHO'S GONNA COOL THESE SHOES, Red Sovine TEDDY BEAR, and that's 30+ years separation right there and that's just for starters...
