Bad Blood
Boy George / Culture Club Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

His kingdom's got its own rules
Not from a word out of place
They talk behind your back
But never to your face
Tough love is a killer
I see it takin' ya down
Are you feelin' brave
Wanna be erased
Are you feelin' brave

You wanna talk but do you want the truth
Bad blood drippin' on your dancin' shoes
You own the world, nothin' left to prove
Bad blood drippin' on your dancin' shoes

Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
(Bad blood)

Everybody's talkin' now
(Too much talkin' now)
Is there anything to say
Me, I'm trippin' on humanity
(Trippin', trippin', trippin')
Show me your face

You wanna talk but do you want the truth
Bad blood drippin' on your dancin' shoes
You own the world, nothin' left to prove
Bad blood drippin' on your dancin' shoes

Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
(Bad blood)

Will you ever take me to that place
Bodies hyped up for the human race
Will you ever take me to that place
Bodies hyped up for the human race
(Ah) human race

Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
Bad blood
(Bad blood) oh, oh oh, oh
Bad blood

Bad blood
(Bad blood)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Boy George / Culture Club's song "Bad Blood" are about the negative effects of toxic relationships and the pain that comes with being betrayed by someone who you have poured all your trust and love in. The opening lines "His kingdom's got its own rules, not from a word out of place" suggest that the male persona in the song resides in a world that is governed by a strict set of unwritten laws which the female character has presumably broken.

The chorus "You wanna talk but do you want the truth, bad blood drippin' on your dancing shoes, you own the world, nothing left to prove, bad blood drippin' on your dancing shoes" emphasizes the female character's hypocrisy, as she continues to put on airs and pretenses and tries to erase her negative actions, all the while trampling on those who truly care for her.

As the song progresses, the male persona tries to understand why people talk behind each other's backs and why they can't just be honest with each other, as he states "Everybody's talkin' now, is there anything to say, me, I'm trippin' on humanity, show me your face." The song then finishes with a plea "Will you ever take me to that place, bodies hyped up for the human race, will you ever take me to that place, bodies hyped up for the human race" as the male persona tries to find a way to heal from the pain of betrayal and start anew.

Overall, the song is a commentary on the complexities of relationships and human nature, and how difficult it can be to accept the truth and move on from past hurts.
