The Skye Boat Song
Corries Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Loud the wind howls
Loud the waves roar
Thunderclaps rend the air
Baffled our foes
Stand by the shore
Follow they will not dare
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Many's the lad fought on that day
Well the claymore did wield
When the night came
Silently lain
Dead on Colloden field
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Though the waves heave
Soft will ye sleep
Ocean's a royal bed
Rocked in the deep
Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.

Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

Overall Meaning

"The Skye Boat Song" by The Corries is a traditional Scottish folk song that tells the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was forced to flee Scotland after the Jacobite rising of 1745 was defeated at the Battle of Culloden. The lyrics depict the journey of the prince, who is referred to as "the lad that's born to be king," as he is smuggled from the mainland of Scotland to the Isle of Skye, where he hoped to find safe passage to France.

The beginning of the song gives the impression of urgency and excitement, with the sailors calling out for the boat to move quickly "like a bird on the wing". The wind and waves are depicted as loud and fierce, but the prince's followers are determined to get him to Skye regardless of the danger from their enemies. The sentiment is one of bravery and determination- the prince's followers not only face the harsh elements of the sea but also the risk of being caught by the authorities.

As the song progresses, it takes a somber turn as the lyrics describe the many lives lost in the battle at Culloden, and the night that followed which was silent with the dead. It is a poignant reminder of the cost of the conflict that the prince's followers were fleeing from. However, the final verses of the song offer comfort- the deep ocean is described as a "royal bed" that will gently rock the tired infant to sleep, and Flora, the clan chief’s daughter, is watching over him.
