Mother Freedom
David Gates/Bread Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Freedom, keep walkin'
Keep on your toesand don't stop talkin' 'bout
Freedom, get goin'
Lots to be learned and lots to be knowin' 'bout
People, gotta reach 'em
Sit 'em right down and then you gotta teach 'em 'bout
Freedom, gotta win it
Gotta put yourself smack dab in it

Hey tomorrow
Now don't you go away
Cause freedom
Just might come your way

Freedom, keep tryin'
People stay alive and people keep dyin' for
Freedom, so don't lose it
Ya gotta understand ya just can't abuse it
Freedom, get movin'
Never gonna stop till everybody's groovin' on
Love for, one another
Callin' some friend and callin' some brother

Hey tomorrow
You're not so far away

Mother freedom
We'll know you well someday

These guys will never make the Hall (what a joke), but I swear on a stack of 8-tracks, they're better than half the acts in there. I've been a Bread fan for over 40 years. I don't think they ever did a bad song. Criminally underrated. True fans know the real story ♥️

Ditto!

Absolutely absolutely 1000%. I could not have said that better myself I just punched this song up because I heard an advertisement and I heard them playing a few bars of freedom. I immediately took my mind back to sixth grade and said freedom now who is that? That’s bread isn’t it then I spoke bread into the search bar on YouTube. Sure enough I was right Freedom was written by bread the best band ever to come out of the United States is bread I’m gonna go buy their best hits ASAP first thing in the morning I’m gonna start singing and playing the stuff on the drums like I did in 6/7 eighth ninth 10th 12th grade Are used to sing every single one of their songs while driving in the car with my folks they used to love to hear me sing bread. It made me the singer I am today I have a four octave voice because of bread. This is the best band ever now I’m 63 years old. Shame on me for forgetting who this great band is shame on me.

You said it brother !

Baby I’m a want you went to #3 on the billboard top 100. The riff feels straight out of the GFR playbook. Mother Freedom make way for the groove and the battle-cry chorus

@beakerstreet1090

Bread is really one of the great bands of the 70's. This is my favorite, because it rocks, period!

@bonnieholland6801

I was born 1960 and my oldest brother was jamming to this band around 1968. I have loved them since then. Great band!

@themourningdove7208

Greatest in the 7Os..surely your trolling an empty lake

@fonzario

Takes me back to about ‘74 when we had a high school band going and this reminds me of our guitar player who played guitar, sang and looked like David Gates. In fact his first name was also David.
