Agnes
Donnie Iris & The Cruisers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were standing on the corner one night
Me and Agnes
She had these tight jeans on
And these high shoes
Bad

It was a warm September night
Wind was blowin' through the trees
This dude Louie was looking for a fight

He knocked me down with all his might

He put a gun up to my head
Stay away from her or you'll be dead
Don't you ever see that girl he said

Agnes was a waitress at our bar
Louie said she'd never go too far
Louie didn't see her in my car
Louie didn't see her in my car
After that fight at Louie's bar

Yeah Agnes
Caused you all this sadness
(He didn't know that you were out of your mind)
What you did was madness
(He didn't know it was the end of the line)
Someday we're gonna pay
(He had it coming to him)
We gotta watch out
(Watch out)
There's been talk about
(I didn't know that you were out of your mind)
Soon they're gonna find out
(I didn't know it was the end of the line)
What we did that day
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh

She got off work at 2 o'clock
We drove away so we could talk
We didn't see Louie in the dark

Louie pulled me out onto the ground
Then I saw Louie start to run
He didn't know she had his gun
(He didn't know she had his gun)
I didn't know she had his gun

Oh-oh Agnes
He caused you all this sadness
(He didn't know that you were out of your mind)
It was madness
(He didn't know it was the end of the line)
We're gonna pay
(He had it coming to him)
Oh oh we have to watch out
(Watch out)
You know there's been alotta talk about
(I didn't know that you were out of your mind)
Someday soon they're gonna find out
(I didn't know it was the end of the line)
You better never look back
(He had it coming to him)
Baby don't look back
We got to run now
Baby throw away the gun now
(He didn't know that you were out of your mind)

Baby baby baby it's tough now
Someday we're gonna pay

Overall Meaning

The song "Agnes" by Donnie Iris tells a story about a man and a woman named Agnes who fall in love, but have to deal with the dangers of jealousy and possessiveness. The man describes a night when they were standing on a corner and a man named Louie comes looking for a fight. Louie warns the man to stay away from Agnes or else he'll kill him. However, Louie doesn't realize that Agnes had his gun and she ends up shooting and killing him. The song explores themes of love, jealousy, desperation, and the consequences of one's actions.

The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the events that unfold. The imagery of the warm September night with the wind blowing through the trees, Agnes' tight jeans and high shoes, and Louie coming out of nowhere to attack the man, all contribute to the tense and dramatic atmosphere of the song. The chorus emphasizes the gravity of the situation as the man and Agnes realize the severity of their actions and the possible repercussions they may face in the future.

Just saw him at his 80th birthday bash what a performance.

@TheAnxiousAdventurer

Does he still sing pretty good at 80?

@labyfan1313

This song is AMAZING! I'm 35, I love classic rock and I've known "Ah! Leah!" since I was a teen. But recently I've been digging deeper into the music of some of the artists who have songs that I like and I just came across this one today. I love the sound, I love the story, I love this song. Can't wait to discover more Donnie Iris after hearing this one and a few others. I'm kicking myself that it took me 20+ years to listen to more of what he has to offer.

@logan_e

Don't kick yourself too hard, I'm 61 and loved "Ah Leah" from the first time I heard it on the radio in 1980 but I didn't find out who the band or singer was and it passed away through time. I've just rediscovered it and Donnie Iris today, 42 years later! My very bad, talk about kicking yourself! 😁👍

@I_Have_The_Most_Japanese_Music

I had a similar experience with his rival, The Michael Stanley Band; you might want to check them out too.
