Cinco minutos con vos
Elvis Costello/The Roots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stood at the kerb trying not to disturb
The dark carnival crew and a glittering voice
Far off there said, "Rejoice"
"As the casualties are but few"

Going to tell you now
Before I forget myself
I could let you loose
But the key won't undo the lock
And the face of the clock
Seemed to merrily mock
These five minutes with you

Mi padre sabía
Y me lo susurro
Vete a Montevideo y espérame ahí
Por dónde empezar?
Escuchando siempre están
Por cinco minutos o mas
Si te atreves

La sirenas lamentan
La plaga que encuentran
Las balas caen
Y te harán desaparecer
El faro oscurece hay poca esperanza
Cinco minutos con vos

The propeller was droning, I woke up alone
They opened the door and they threw me through
And down I went down, like the twist of a screw
Down into the silver, above me the blue
And you stood there waiting but you never knew
Five Minutes With You

They can scatter the earth and find nothing of worth
Wipe out those years of triangular tears
The colors will fly
And the wild wind will cry I'm strapped to that mast

Knowing they wouldn't last for
Five Minutes With You

Overall Meaning

The song "Cinco Minutos con Vos" by Elvis Costello/The Roots has a rich and complex story at its core. The first verse talks about the singer standing on the edge of the street, trying to avoid disturbing the dark carnival crew, and hearing a voice from far away that says to rejoice as the casualties are few. The lyrics are a commentary on the state of the world and how people are often distracted from the suffering of others. The next verse is in Spanish and talks about the singer's father telling him to go to Montevideo and wait for him. The lyrics suggest that the singer and his father have a complicated relationship and that he doesn't know where to begin when it comes to understanding his father's choices. The last verse is about the singer waking up alone and being thrown through a door into a world of darkness. He finds himself strapped to a mast and knows that he only had five minutes with the person he loves.

Go ahead Elvis , with your bad self , you and everybody being in both the Grove & the Zone ! Excellent !

@PedroPetracco

The Roots are so good they can pull off the most ludicrous keyboard sound ever: "Jazz Scat" aka "Cover Your Ears And Run patch". Also present in the awesome track "Tunnel Vision" off of How I Got Over (2010)

Elvis Costello is bananas! He is an incredible writer. This is still one of my favorites tracks from Wise Up Ghosts

@lizziesangi1602

Elvis Costello and The Roots are excellent. By far his best band and some of his best work. This tune is almost haunting - outstanding

Beautiful song! Una historia sobre los infames "vuelos de la muerte" de la sanguinaria dictadura militar argentina del 76' al 82'. It brings tears to my eyes. Comforting to know that the talented free minded artist I admire has his heart in the right place! Love to you dear Elvis, from Argentina! Gracias! Wish you could visit my country sometime❤️

Music the universal language and this is a master piece !

@LIZZIE-lizzie

This is DEF one of his best tunes! Jerry Garcia would be proud of him! The Roots are bangin' badass!
