Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Kinney began singing in the late 1960s, and joined the vocal group, The Poppies, replacing their former singer, Patsy McClune. Kinney remained in the group with Dorothy Moore and Rosemary Taylor for about two years, and also released a solo single, "Your Love's Not Reliable", during this time, however it was not a success.
In the early 1970s she began working as a session musician and backing vocalist. Among the songs she sang on were King Floyd's "Groove Me", and her former "Poppie" bandmate Dorothy Moore's 1976 Top 10 single, "Misty Blue".
By then having settled as a housewife, Kinney in 1979 decided to attempt a comeback, and she recorded her own version of "Groove Me", but changed the rhythm on the song to turn it into a disco dance track. The song reached number 6 on the Billboard dance chart. Her next single "Together We Are Beautiful", released in 1980 was another disco song, but with a slower and more sultry beat. It had been recorded by the British vocalist, Steve Allan, eighteen months earlier. It failed to chart in the United States, but oddly reached number one in the United Kingdom.
Kinney's subsequent releases attempted to continue in the disco style, however by this time the disco fad had reached its peak and Kinney was unable to repeat her success. By 1983 she had returned to her earlier career as a backing vocalist. In 1994, Music Club released an album (MCCD 167) of Kinney's records called Chemistry The Best Of under the licence from Malaco Records, which contained 17 tracks.
Baby Let Me Kiss You

Let me kiss you, baby
Baby, can I do it, can I do it to you
Can I kiss you, baby?
Cause baby, you're giving me such a groovy sensation
But don't stop it now, baby - I might lose your vibration
Your sweet conversation, it keeps turning me on, yeah
My mind is so weak girl, all my resistance is gone
You keep it up, baby, I might lose my reputation
Baby, let me do it, let me do it to you
Let me kiss you, baby
Baby, can I do it, can I do it to you
Can I kiss you, baby?
Baby, let me do it now, cause I'm bout to do it anyhow
You know you got, baby, oh, what I want now
But every time I want to, you tell me don't
Don't do this, now you say I can't do that
Come on, baby - girl, how you gonna act?
So baby, let me do it, let me do it to you
Let me kiss you, baby
Baby, can I do it, can I do it to you
Can I kiss you, baby?
Good God...
You're looking good, just like I thought you would
So come on, baby - let me kiss you just-a one time
I think I might kiss you one, two times
You're looking good now, feeling good
You got me going down, round and round
Up and down, baby, feeling good, now
Come on, baby - Good God...
Baby, let me do it, let me do it to you
Let me kiss you, baby
The lyrics to Fern Kinney's song "Baby Let Me Kiss You" is the plea of the singer to her lover to allow her to take control of the situation and fully express her desire for a physical relationship. The song starts with the singer asking her lover's permission to kiss him repeatedly which he seems to be withholding from her. She explains that his presence and conversations are giving her a "groovy sensation" and her mind is weak to resist. She pleads with him not to stop because she may lose the feeling she has for him.
The second stanza expresses her frustration in his indecisiveness as he keeps changing his mind about allowing her to kiss him. She is asking him to allow her to express herself fully and not limit her experiences. The bridge of the song is an instrumental break where the rhythm amplifies the sensuality of the song. The last verse is the climax of the song as she implores him one more time to let her kiss him and promises to make him feel good as well.
In summary, the lyrics of "Baby Let Me Kiss You" display the intensity and desperation of a physical desire between two lovers. The singer's plea is for her lover to allow her to express herself fully without limitations. The song's rhythm and energy compliment the lyrics which creates a sensual atmosphere that captures the listener's attention.
