The band has kept up the mix of traditional Irish or Scottish songs and self-written tracks, though the self-written tracks have progressively become less and less folky. The band's influences are wide and varied, but obviously heavily influenced by Celtic rock bands like the Pogues, the Waterboys and Great Big Sea. Recent albums also see a clear influence from Gothic rock music. Having enjoyed growing success in and around Germany, the band reached 1000 played concerts in 2004 (the only band member to play them all is bass player Rainer Schulz), which was celebrated with a concert at Castle Hoheneck. This concert was filmed and released on two DVDs: Celebrate! and Jubilate! The concert saw participation from former band members and other guest musicians. Main lyric and music writer Peter Pathos has left the band in summer 2006 and was replaced by Patrick 'Pat' Prziwara. A live DVD Folk's not dead was released to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary in 2010

WHALE SONG
Fiddler's Green Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If I had the wings of a gull me boys, I'd spread them and fly home
I'd leave old Greenland's icy ground for of right whales there is none
And the weather's rough and the winds do blow and there's little comfort here
I'd sooner be snug in an Edinburg pub a-drinking of strong beer
Oh a man must be mad or want money bad to venture catching whales
For he may be drowned when the whale turns around or his head be smashed by the tail
In a very short burst you'll hear the curse and the cry of "There she blows"
Now there she blows again
This fight is all insane
It's time for mutiny
To end this misery
So take me home where I belong
I won't go on with sth. wrong
Don't count on me and set me free
It's time to end that misery
All hands on deck now for God's sake, move briskly if you can
And you stumble on deck both dizzy and sick, and for the life you don't give a damn
And high overhead the great fish sped and the mate gave the whale the iron
And soon the blood in a purple flood from the spout whole comes a-flying
These trails we bear for nigh four years till the ship she points for home
We're due for our toil a bonus on the oil and an equal share of the bone
When we go to the agent to settle for the trip when we find we've cause to lament
For we slaved away four years of our lives and earned about three pounds ten
The song "Whale Song" by Fiddler's Green tells the story of a group of whalers working in Greenland on a ship. The song begins with a desire to leave due to the harsh weather conditions and the lack of whales to catch. The singer imagines himself flying away like a seagull, leaving the crew and their troubles behind. He expresses the dangers of whaling, noting that it's a job that requires madness or high need of money. The risks of drowning or being killed by a whale's tail are mentioned. The song continues with the realization that the whalers had enough and mutiny brews because of the misery of the ongoing venture. The last verse tells of the disappointment of the payoff amount for years of hard work and implies that whaling is not worth it.
The song is a commentary on the harsh realities of whaling in the 19th century. It depicts the challenging conditions that whalers had to endure on a daily basis, ranging from rough weather to dangerous sea creatures. The story of the song is told from the perspective of a disillusioned whaler who has had enough of the life and is looking for a way out. The lyrics created by Peter Pappott are poignant, and the melody delivered by the band Fiddler's Green adds an emotional depth to the song that leaves a mark on anyone who listens.

Since you're into folk, might I interest you in the songs of my people?
When you think "brazilian folk", I bet you think about Samba or MPB. In fact Brazil is a big country and some regional traditions don't get the spotlight. Let alone Gaucho music, which despite being widespread throughout the country, especially in rural areas, is more aligned culturally with Argentinian and Uruguayan music, specifically the Pampas region where nomadic cattle herders birthed the Gaucho culture some 300 years ago. These songs are all modern compositions, but they borrow heavily from spanish culture.
It's usual instruments are the spanish guitar and the acordion, sometimes followed by the contrabass and rarely with violas, violins and 12 string guitars.
A ChamamΓ© is a dancing rythm, so it's usually 3/4 Aor 4/4 tempo. It originates from Argentina.

A Milonga is a fast paced listening rythm, common for street artists. Also borrowed from Argentina.

Nativist music is a more modern incarnation. Though it sings about aspects of life in the pampas.

I have been trying for years to find music similar to Bottom Feeders and I finally have! Most "Celtic Rock" or "Celtic Punk" music I found was missing the special sauce of the fiddle, and the few that actually had the fiddle were missing something else, but this is exactly what I was looking for.
