The Trails
Gojira - Fortitude Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All that you see that is gold is truly gold
I spotted through the vines, a deer in the wild

Signs in the trails
Beyond the reason

Eye-gazing the unknown, defeating the ground
This passage through the flames, leads me where the souls go

Signs in the dreams
Beyond the reason
We're forced into the light

How can we be so blind?
Our light is torn
How can we be so lame?
No truth being told

Signs in the trails
Beyond the reason

All that you see that lives truly is alive
Let us stay awake reminded of the trails that matter

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Trails" by Gojira encompass themes of perception, self-discovery, and the search for truth. The song begins with the line "All that you see that is gold is truly gold," suggesting that there is genuine value in what we perceive and experience. It encourages listeners to recognize the beauty and significance in the world around them.

The second line, "I spotted through the vines, a deer in the wild," evokes a sense of natural wonder and observation. It suggests that in the midst of the chaotic and unpredictable world, there are moments of clarity and connection that can be found if we look closely.

The repeated phrase "Signs in the trails, beyond the reason" implies that there are deeper meanings and messages hidden in the paths we walk in life. It suggests that there is more to our existence than what can be logically understood or explained. This line speaks to the idea that we should not limit ourselves to only what is rational or known, but be open to the mystical and unexplainable.

The following lines, "Eye-gazing the unknown, defeating the ground" and "This passage through the flames, leads me where the souls go," describe a journey of self-discovery and transformation. It suggests that by confronting the unknown and facing our fears, we can transcend the limitations of our physical existence and reach a higher level of consciousness.

The lyrics continue to question the human condition, asking "How can we be so blind?" and questioning the lack of truth being told. It reflects on the paradox of humanity, as we possess the ability to perceive the world yet often fail to see things clearly or acknowledge the truth.

In the chorus, the phrase "All that you see that lives truly is alive" implies a deeper connection and interdependence between all living beings. It urges listeners to remain awake and aware, reminding them of the trails that truly matter and the importance of staying connected to the world and its inherent life.

Overall, Gojira's "The Trails" delves into the significance of perception, self-discovery, and the search for truth. It encourages listeners to look beyond reason, embrace the unknown, and recognize the value in the world around them. It serves as a reminder to remain awake and engaged in the trails that truly matter.

It's crazy how among so many heavy songs on the album, this turned out to be my favorite.

@Måsstaden Chant is what led me to delve into Gojira. Born in Winter was the first song I ever heard by them. It hands down one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. I love this album. This songs is equivalent to Shooting Star to me.

@Salvador Silica I don’t think they are a thrash oldie. Gojira is my favorite band and even if say that this is not a great ballad, not to say that it isn’t good just very repetitive. Not to mention that it’s not a very Gojira-y song anyway, it’s kinda the black sheep of this album. Fortitude is definitely the better soft song on this album, it’s much more interesting and it expands into the chant. Hold On is my favorite song of the album and it’s soft for the entire first half.

@KirbySucks I think the lyrics of Into the Storm should be looked at with the context of the rest of the album. Espeically juxtaposing it with the last song - Grind - which is lyrically the opposite of Into the Storm. In general I think the theme of the album is how long you can stay brave in the face of despair - how much Fortitude you have.
