God Song
John - Flor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cain slew Abel,
Seth, he knew not why.
For, if the children of Israel were supposed to multiply,
Why must any children die?
So he asked the L-rd.

And the L-rd said:
"Man means nothing,
He means even less to me
Than the lonliest cactus flower
Or the homeless yucca tree.
He chases round the desert hah!
Chasing after me ('cause he thinks he might find me there).
L-rd, that's why I love mankind
(He's so stupid).

I recoil in horror from the fondness of thee,
From the squalor and the filth; all your misery
Oh, how we laugh up here in Heaven
At the praise you offer me.
That is why i just love mankind hah!"

The Christians and the Jews,
They had a great, big jamboree.
The Buddhists and the Hindus
Joined in on satellite TV.
They picked the four greatest priests
They began to speak.

They said:
"Plague is on the world
L-rd, no man is free.
The temples that we've built to you,
They just tumbled to the sea;
L-rd, if you won't take care of us,
Please let us be!"

And the L-rd said
The L-ord said:

"I burn down your cities:
How blind you must be;
I take away your children:
You say how blessed are thee;
Y'all must be crazy, now, men,
To put your faith in a man like me:
That's why I love you, mankind!
That is why I you,

That's why I love you, mankind!
Hah, ha, ha, hah"

Overall Meaning

The song "God Song" by John - Flor raises philosophical questions about the nature of God, his relationship with humanity, and the existence of suffering in the world. The song is divided into three parts, each of which presents a different perspective on God and his role in human affairs.

The first part of the song takes as its starting point the story of Cain and Abel. The singer reflects on the senseless violence of Cain's act and the apparent injustice of the fact that innocent children have to die. He then asks God for an explanation, but instead of finding comfort in God's words, he is met with a cruel and indifferent deity who tells him that humans mean nothing to Him, that He loves them precisely because they are so stupid and that He takes pleasure in watching them suffer.

The second part of the song takes the form of a dialogue between four religious leaders who are grappling with the same issues. They lament the state of the world, which is plagued by disease, war, and suffering, and they wonder where God is in all this. But once again, God appears to them as a merciless figure who delights in causing pain and destruction.

The third and final part of the song is a chilling rendition of the chorus, which is sung in a more upbeat and joyful tone than before. Here, the singer seems to have given up on his quest for answers and resigned himself to the inescapable fact that God is cruel and capricious, and that humanity is destined to suffer. The song leaves us with a sense of despair and resignation, as if there is no hope for redemption or salvation.
