Sadie The Cleaning Lady
John Farnham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sadie, the cleaning lady
With trusty scrubbing brush and pail of water
Worked her fingers to the bone, for the life she had at home
Providing at the same time for her daughter

Ahh Sadie, the cleaning lady
Her aching knees not getting any younger
Well her red detergent hands, have for years not held a man's
And time would find her heart expired of hunger

Scrub your floors, do your chores, dear old Sadie
Looks as though you'll always be a cleaning lady
Can't afford to get bored dear old Sadie
Looks as though you'll always be a cleaning lady

Ahh Sadie, the cleaning la-ady
Her female mind would find a way of trapping
Though as gentle as a lamb, Sam the elevator man
So she could spend the night by TV, napping

Ahh Sadie, the cleaning lady
Her aching knees not getting any younger
Well her red detergent hands, have for years not held a man's
And time would find her heart expired of hunger

Ahh, scrub your floors, do your chores, dear old Sadie
Looks as though you'll always be a cleaning lady
Can't afford to get bored dear old Sadie
Looks as though you'll always be a cleaning lady

Ahh Sadie, the cleaning lady
Her Sam was what she got, hook, line and sinker
To her sorrow and dismay, she's still working to this day
Her Sam turned out to be a nervous figure

Ahh, scrub your floors, do your chores, dear old Sadie

Looks as though you'll always be a cleaning lady
Can't afford to get bored dear old Sadie (fade)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Farnham's "Sadie, The Cleaning Lady" tell the story of a woman named Sadie, who works as a cleaning lady to provide for herself and her daughter. She works tirelessly, often to the point of exhaustion, and her hands are rough and calloused from years of scrubbing floors and doing chores. Despite her hard work, Sadie is resigned to the fact that she will always be a cleaning lady and will never be able to escape her humble station in life.

The lyrics suggest that Sadie is lonely and longs for companionship, particularly from a man. Her knees and hands ache with age and years of hard work, and her heart is "expired of hunger." At some point, Sadie becomes infatuated with Sam the elevator man, and she devises a plan to spend the night in front of the TV in his company. However, the relationship doesn't last and she is left alone, still working as a cleaning lady to make ends meet.

Overall, the song portrays Sadie as a hard-working, determined woman who is resigned to the fact that she will never rise above her station in life. Despite her dedication to her work and her hope for a better future, Sadie remains trapped in her role as a cleaning lady.

Even though this song is old. I still love it. Thinking Of you John get well soon!

I'd never heard the 2nd song "In My Room" before. To my mind it is actually the better of the two songs, though obviously not as catchy as Sadie was. It also really shows his voice much better and gives very strong hints of just how great his voice really is.
Thanks for uploading this NZOZ.

I too had never heard it before until just now! It's a much much better song!

Absolutely. You can hear much more of 80s+ Farnsey in the second song. So much so I would actually have been interested to hear him sing this at his 80s peak.

Jon Dunmore

Wow. Remember this back in Aus. From humble beginnings, who would've thought back then, this was the guy who would become the most powerful vocalist in Australia.

@MsLizziebeth1 -- Cool link! What unlimited power in his shouts, and then down to singing the song in tune, in such a low range.

@Jon Dunmore Hi Jon, I agree. Farnsy is such a cool guy on stage. He was always best live! Raconteur and comedian! ....popping off hits with incredible power almost as an afterthought. This found clip is a treasure for the intro to his "backing band" (MSO), and for seeing them have so much impish fun too. "Fun with Farnsy 1988", it should be renamed :)))).

More powerful than Jimmy barnes? Doubt it

Jon Dunmore

@psychedelic prawn crumpets -- Barnesy is a screamer. Farnsy is a vocalist's vocalist.
