Why don't kids have the right to choose their own name?
This shit is just not fair,
Who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame,
Yeah, who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame
Some babies, some babies just ain't
cute with a name with a name like Bruce,
and everyone knows that Bruce is an old man's name,
like Bernard, Willis, Jimmy, Stan or Stu,
Who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame,
Yeah, who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame
Who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame,
Yeah, who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame
Yea, who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame,
Yeah, who would call a kid Bruce anyway?
The poor kid would haveta hang his head in shame
hang his head in shame,
hang his head in shame,
hang his head in shame.
Rubicon’s song “Bruce” is a commentary on the expectations and norms surrounding baby names. The lyric “Some kids, some kids they just ain't cute with a name like Bruce” suggests that there is a standard of what is considered a “cute” name for a baby, and Bruce does not fit into that standard. The song then poses the question “Why don't kids have the right to choose their own name?”, which highlights the idea that children are often given names that they may not like or feel comfortable with.
The repetition of the line “Who would call a kid Bruce anyway?” emphasizes the point that the name is seen as unappealing and outdated, as it is associated with older generations. This is further highlighted with the line “like Bernard, Willis, Jimmy, Stan or Stu”, which lists other names that are not commonly associated with young people. The song ultimately ends on the note that a child given the name Bruce would “have to hang his head in shame”, suggesting that societal expectations of names can lead to shame and discomfort.
Overall, “Bruce” is a reflection on the power dynamics and standards that come with naming a child, and how these can impact one’s sense of self.
