arabian knights
Suzie And The Banshees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The jewel, the prize
Looking into your eyes
Cool pools drown your mind
What else will you find

I heard a rumour - it was just a rumour
I heard a rumour - what have you done to her
Myriad lights - they said I'd be impressed
Arabian Knights - at your primitive best

A tourist oasis - reflects in seedy sunshades
A monstrous oil tanker
Its wound bleeding in seas

I heard a rumour - what have you done to her
I heard a rumour - what have you done to her

Veiled behind screens
Kept as your baby machine
Whilst you conquer more orifices
Of boys, goats and things
Ripped out sheeps' eyes - no forks or knives

Myriad lights - they said I'd be impressed
Arabian Knights - at your primitive best

Overall Meaning

In Suzie And The Banshees's song "Arabian Knights," the lyrics evoke a sense of mystique, power dynamics, and cultural exploration. The opening lines, "The jewel, the prize, looking into your eyes, cool pools drown your mind, what else will you find," suggest the allure and captivating nature of the subject's eyes. It portrays a mysterious and enchanting individual, possibly representing a seductive character.

The lyrics then introduce a rumor, emphasizing its significance and the impact it has had on someone. The repetition of "I heard a rumor - what have you done to her" raises questions about the actions taken and the consequences faced. It is likely referring to some form of mistreatment or harm inflicted upon a woman, possibly at the hands of the mesmerizing figure portrayed in the song.

The song then delves into a contrasting imagery of a tourist oasis and a monstrous oil tanker, both reflecting in "seedy sunshades." This juxtaposition highlights the clashing realities and societal issues present in the region. The image of the oil tanker bleeding in seas symbolizes the destructive impact of the oil industry on the environment and the communities it affects. It suggests that beneath the facade of a picturesque oasis lies a darker reality.

The lyrics continue with imagery of a veiled woman, kept as a "baby machine," while the subject conquers various pleasures and exploits orifices without remorse. This verse portrays a disturbing power dynamic and suggests the objectification of women and the disregard for their autonomy. The mention of "ripped out sheeps' eyes - no forks or knives" further adds to the unsettling nature of the narrative, implying a violent and primitive approach to satisfying desires.

The song concludes by reiterating the "myriad lights" that promised fascination and the "Arabian Knights" at their "primitive best." This ending line suggests that despite the complexities and negative aspects depicted throughout the lyrics, there is still a lingering fascination and allure associated with the exoticized Arabian culture. It highlights the conflicting perceptions and realities often perpetuated through cultural stereotypes.

Overall, "Arabian Knights" by Suzie And The Banshees explores themes of seduction, power dynamics, rumors, environmental issues, and cultural perception. It presents a complex and thought-provoking narrative that challenges the listener to reflect on the layers of meaning behind the lyrics and the social issues they address.

That's what I love about Gothic rock--the intelligent, poetic lyrics, the romanticism, and the deep thought.  Siouxsie & the Banshees really set the standard in this, along with The Cure, And Also the Trees, Joy Division, and The Sisters of Mercy.

+Dex F none of the mentioned bands are goth. you'll never find gothbands as skilled or intellectual as them

@thanosrocks5288

mate this is NOT gothic rock! this IS pure punk from late 70s early 80s - I know cause i grew up with it and saw it/her

@krussis9213

It is still shit.

@aSpectreAppears

You can call them goth rock. Their lyrics are mostly about depression and death. The gothic thing started in the 1800s with things like Bram Stroker, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe and even Lovecraft.

All I can tell you that the amount of lesser known but absolutely brilliant music that's there to be discovered from the 80's alone is virtually endless.
