The Snake
Shivaree Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the way to work one morning
Down the path along side the lake
A tender hearted woman
Found a poor half-frozen snake

His pretty colored skin
Had been all frosted with the dew
"Poor thing" she cried, "I'll take you in
Aand I'll take care of you."

Take me in tender woman
Take me in for heaven's sake
Take me in tender woman
Sighed the Snake

She wrapped him up all cozy
In a comforter of silk
And laid him by the fireside
With some honey and some milk

She hurried home from work that night
And as soon as she arrived
She found that pretty snake she'd taken in had been revived.

Take me in tender woman
Take me in for heaven's sake
Take me in tender woman
Sighed the Snake

She clutched him to her bosom
"You're so beautiful" she cried
"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died."

Well she stroked his pretty skin again
And kissed him really tight,
Instead of saying thanks,
the snake gave her a vicious bite.

Take me in tender woman
Take me in for heaven's sake
Take me in tender woman
Sighed the Snake

"I saved you!" cried the woman
"And you've bitten me but why?"
"You know your bite is poisonous
And now I'm gonna die."

"Ha shut up, silly woman."
Said that reptile with a grin.
"You knew darn well I was a snake before you took me in."

Take me in tender woman
Take me in for heaven's sake
Take me in tender woman
Sighed the Snake

Take me in tender woman
Sighed the Snake

Take me in tender woman
Sighed the Snake.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shivaree's song "The Snake" tell the story of a woman who comes across a half-frozen snake on her way to work by the lake. Being tender-hearted, she takes the snake in, warms it up, feeds it and cares for it. However, when she cuddles the snake and admires its beauty, it bites her viciously. The woman is shocked and asks why it would do such a thing after she had taken care of it; the snake, with a sly grin, responds that it is a snake and that is what snakes do.

The song's lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, but ultimately, it is a cautionary tale about trust and the consequences of naivety. The woman in the story is a metaphor for people who show kindness without considering the consequences or intentions of those they help. The snake, on the other hand, is representative of people who are untrustworthy, manipulative, and often take advantage of the generosity of others without any remorse.

The lyrics of "The Snake" leave an eerie feeling that lingers long after the Song has ended, and the haunting music perfectly complements the atmosphere that the singer is trying to create.

I think this is the meaning of the song: The "snake" is not reptilian, but human -- in a way. It is a song about an abusive or unfaithful partner. This woman with a gentle heart meets a good-looking fellow who's in some sort of bad way. She helps him out, they fall in love, and as soon as the man gets his life in order, he does something to hurt Lady Gentleheart, (abuses her, cheats on her) then justifies it by saying she knew he was the way he was when the relationship started

@KPho150

Who doesn't know that...

@budpurps

I mean, that's one way to interpret it. The other is that this is a straight up telling of an aesop fable: the farmer and the viper.

@ManaSnakeOnAcid

Shivaree, did a great work, with the lyrics. So real, bitter and cruel. Magnificent!

Well, Shevaree is making a version of the original song of Al Wilson, I just discovered... some northern soul classic.... Btw, the lyrics are inspired in one of Esopo's story.
