I'll Have To Go Away
Skylark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tired? yes, I am ? I thought I?d found a home
But life in the city is dark and it?s dirty
So I guess I have to go away?

Lonely?yes, I am? no one knows my name
I?m lost in a place where no one has a face
So I guess, I guess I have to go away?
Saying goodbye is not easy? how will I ever explain?
Everything looks just like cardboard pictures falling apart in the rain?

Running? yes, I am? I?ll wave goodbye to all the trains
If I?m looking for a river that goes on forever
I guess I have to go away?

Saying goodbye is not easy? how will I ever explain?
Everything looks just like cardboard pictures falling apart in the rain?

Saying goodbye is not easy? how will I ever explain?
Everything looks just like cardboard pictures falling apart in the rain?

Saying goodbye is not easy? how will I ever explain?
Everything looks just like cardboard pictures falling apart in the rain?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Skylark's song "I'll Have To Go Away" seem to be describing a feeling of being lost and disconnected in a big city. The singer is reflecting on their experience of trying to make a home in a place with no sense of community or belonging. They feel lonely and disconnected, like they are lost in a place where no one knows or cares about them. The repeated phrase, "So I guess I have to go away," seems to express a sense of resignation, as though the singer has come to terms with the fact that they will never find what they are looking for in this place. They are tired of trying and ready to move on.

The idea of saying goodbye is a recurring theme in the song. The singer seems to be struggling with the prospect of leaving behind everything they have known and loved, even though they know it's the right thing to do. The image of "cardboard pictures falling apart in the rain" suggests a sense of impermanence and transience that resonates with the theme of saying goodbye. The singer is grappling with the idea that everything they have ever known will soon be gone, and that they will have to start over again in a new place.

Overall, the lyrics of "I'll Have To Go Away" convey a sense of longing for connection and community, and an awareness that sometimes the only way to find those things is to leave behind what is familiar and comfortable.

I'LL HAVE TO GO AWAY!!

This is my favorite Skylark recording. Few know it. Fit my life at that time, and maybe still does as I have grown older. My brother kept my Skylark album and lost his apartment. Since then I have lost him. Life is like that. May be that I knew that all even back then. Perfect tune to an amazing, perhaps melancholy life of sorts. I have loved this group from the get go. Always will.

I just fell in love with this song as a David Cassidy cover, but the original here was released on Capitol-Sovereign the same label as Renaissance's Ashes Are Burning, also 1973. Remarkable similarities (except the I-V [inverted] in the verse is very ELO).

I like this song better than the A side "Wildflower". So comforting and smooth to listen too. I'd of given it a top 10 vote myself and will continue to cherish the memories this song brought to my mind after listening to it.
