Two Door Cinema Club Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sugar dancing on your tongue
Any way
To grow up and stay young
You're getting
Stuck with papers in the magazines
It's just your luck
A stranger's living out your dreams
Once in a lifetime
You give it away soon as you found it
Another day, another breaking wave
Can't live without it
Company
Shadow playing on the wall
And suddenly
You don't miss it at all
You're keeping
Up
Soon you're gonna be a star
And that's enough
To know for certain who you are
Once in a lifetime
You give it away soon as you found it
Another day, another breaking wave
Can't live without it
Another breaking wave
Once in a lifetime
You give it away soon as you found it
Another day, another breaking wave
Can't live without it
Another breaking wave
The lyrics to Two Door Cinema Club's song "Once" seem to be about youth, fame, and the fleeting nature of success in the music industry. The opening lines suggest a desire to escape, to find a way to grow up and stay young, something that is perhaps an unattainable paradox. The mention of sugar dancing on the tongue may be a reference to how we can indulge in the pleasure-seeking side of life while we are young.
The song then shifts to a focus on fame and the superficial aspects of the music industry. The papers in magazines suggest the shallow nature of popular music culture and how it can be difficult to distinguish oneself from the rest of the industry. This is echoed in the line, "A stranger's living out your dreams," suggesting that the dreams of success are not necessarily unique.
The chorus emphasizes the ephemeral nature of success, how it can be given away as soon as it is found, and the constant "breaking wave" of new artists and new music that come and go. The reference to a company and a shadow playing on the wall also reinforces the idea that who we are and what we do can be easily replaced or replicated.
Overall, the lyrics create a sense of urgency, of wanting to make a mark before time runs out, but also acknowledge the limitations and fleeting nature of success.
