Blue Hair
TV Girl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She asked me how to be funny
But that's not something you can teach
What seemed so blue in the sunlight
By the night was a pale green

And I tried to hold her
But it didn't really last long
And she's getting older
I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off

She asked me if she was pretty
Well it's clear that the girl's a fraud
There's really no way of winning
If in their eyes you'll always be a dumb blonde

And she cried over nothing
So there was nothing I could do to stop
Her from cutting
Her beautiful blue hair off

It looked like cotton candy
And just as quick to get licked away
Last I heard she was living
With a boy who acts his age

And I guess I'll just miss her
Even though she isn't even really gone

But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off

Overall Meaning

The song "Blue Hair" by TV Girl is a bittersweet tune that reflects the mixed emotions and memories of a past relationship. The song is about a girl who asks the singer how to be funny and whether she is pretty. The girl is struggling with her own self-image and the perception of others, and her blue hair is a symbol of her individuality and uniqueness. However, as the song progresses, it is apparent that the girl is facing a crisis and is losing her identity as she compromises herself to fit into the societal beauty standards. In the end, she cuts off her blue hair, and with that, she loses a part of herself that made her stand out.

The lyrics "What seemed so blue in the sunlight, by the night was a pale green" is a poetic metaphor for the fleeting nature of identity and self-expression. The color blue is usually associated with sadness, and the girl's hair had a bluish hue that made her unique. However, over time, her blue hair faded to green, indicating that what was once a unique aspect of her personality became more subdued and ordinary. The lyrics "I tried to hold her, but it didn't really last long, and she's getting older, I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off" reveal a sense of helplessness on the singer's part. He recognizes that the girl is growing up and going through changes that he cannot control, and she needs to make peace with herself.

To conclude, "Blue Hair" is about the struggle to conform versus the urge to stay true to oneself. The girl chooses to conform, and the song laments the loss of her unique identity. The music video for the song features a montage of footage from various US beauty pageants, which reinforces the idea of societal beauty standards and conformity. The song is a poignant reminder that society often values conformity over individuality, and it is up to us to stay true to ourselves.

Every time I listen to this song, I interpret it from a dad’s perspective, seeing his daughter grow up.

For example some of the lines such as:

“And I guess, I’ll just miss her. Even though she isn’t even really gone” This line sounds like she moved out, and started a life with that boy in the lyrics. But it also seems like he misses the old her.

“And I tried to hold her, but it didn’t really last long. And she’s getting older, so I guess she’s gotta cut her blue hair off.” This especially sounds like the father struggled, but eventually came to accept the fact that his daughter is growing up and maturing, and no longer that little kid anymore.

I also think it’s about him trying to keep their relationship alive. Despite the fact that she’s changed a lot. Not wanting to hang out or contact her dad anymore

My interpretation of the lyrics:

'She asked me how to be funny
But that's not something you can teach'
This shows her naivety right off the bat, that the singer is someone who she expects to teach her things. She's new to this world, he is her mentor.
'What seemed so blue in the sunlight
By night was a pale green'
If the blue hair is a symbol of her childhood innocence, this might mean she changes during the night, that her naivety is something she shows off like an accessory and not an actual personality trait.
'And I tried to hold her
But it didn't really last long'
He's trying to keep her pure, staying in her childhood state.
'And she's getting older
I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off'
She's getting older, he can't stop her from maturing no matter how much he tries. When she cuts her hair off, she's no longer the kid asking him things anymore.
'She asked me if she was pretty
Well it's clear that the girl's a fraud
There's really no way of winning
If in their eyes you'll always be a dumb blonde'
I see 'the girl' as another person, a blonde woman, and she's asking if she's pretty. This is her considering dying her hair. She relies on his response of what's attractive and what's not before becoming an adult. Maybe because she has an immature attachment to him, and needs him to say the hair colour will be pretty. But he tells her that people only see that woman as a dumb blonde, there's no way of winning if she dyes her hair. AKA, there's no way to win as an adult woman.
'And she cried over nothing
So there was nothing I could do to stop'
He doesn't have control over this reckless, hormonal teen anymore. She's crying over nothing so he can't calm her down.
'Her from cutting
Her beautiful blue hair off'
A suicide attempt and a step into adulthood, cutting ties with her naive past.
'It looked like cotton candy
And just as quick to get licked away'
This genius lyrical subversion at first makes you vision her colourful hair as the cotton candy, until you realise he's talking about blood. Just as quick to get licked away. But 'licked away' also means taking the girl away, and that's what happens next.
'Last I heard she was living
With a boy who acts his age'
Showing she's grown up, moved on and away from him. He was there right before the suicide attempt, but now, he barely even knows where she lives. She grew up.
'And I guess I'll just miss her
Even though she isn't even really gone
But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off'
This verse shows a metaphorical death of the girl, because even though she didn't die that day he will 'just miss her'. She didn't take her life but ever since that day she changed. This ending is a depressing exclamation of what happens when a person is forced to grow up. To cut their blue hair off.

If anyone's reading this: don't take my interpretation as gospel, I didn't look up the actual meaning, this is just what I got from the lyrics 😄
