Hey

Jenny Jenny who can I turn to?
You give me something I can hold on to
I know you'll think I'm like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall

Jenny I've got your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny don't change your number

Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine

Jenny Jenny you're the girl for me
Oh, you don't know me but you make me so happy
I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve
I tried my imagination but I was disturbed

Jenny I've got your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny don't change your number

Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine

I got it (I got it) I got it
I got your number on the wall
I got it (I got it) I got it
For a good time, for a good time call

Hey, Jenny don't change your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny I've called your number

Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine

Jenny Jenny who can I turn to
(Eight six seven five three oh nine)
For the price of a dime I can always turn to you
(Eight six seven five three oh nine)

Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine
Eight six seven five three oh nine (five three oh nine)
Eight six seven five three oh nine (five three oh nine)

Eight six seven five three oh nine (five three oh nine)
Eight six seven five three oh nine (five three oh nine)

Overall Meaning

Tommy Tutone's song "867-5309 / Jenny" tells the story of a man searching for love with a woman named Jenny, whose phone number he found on a bathroom wall. The lyrics express his desire to make Jenny his own and his fear of being mistaken for someone else, as he believes she has likely received many calls from other men who saw her number on the wall. Despite his nerves, he finds the courage to call Jenny and insists that she not change her number.

The repetition of the phone number throughout the song creates a catchy and memorable chorus, and the upbeat melody and high-energy vocals contribute to the song's enduring popularity. However, the message conveyed by the lyrics has drawn criticism, as the song seems to promote the idea of a man pursuing a woman he knows nothing about and who may not even be interested in him. Some have also taken issue with the fact that the song perpetuates the idea of women's phone numbers being widely available for men to use as they please.

I tried to call that number back in 1982 (I was a 15 year old at the time) and the guy on the other end of the phone was so irate he started screaming at me and said "Jenny doesn't live here and please don't call here again"

My Mom & Dad met in the early 90s. At the time my Dad was part of an Acapella group. As a joke/gift to my Mom (named Jenny) he and his friends recorded a cover of this song at a live audience. Somehow my Grandma ended up with the tape years later and to this day, she thinks my Dad WROTE the song FOR my Mom. My whole family thinks it's hilarious so we've never ruined it for my grandma by telling her the truth.
