Miss Pavlichenko
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Miss Pavilichenko's well known to fame
Russia's your country, fighting is your game
The whole world will love her for a long time to come,
For more than three hundred nazis fell by your gun

Fell by your gun, yes,
Fell by your gun
For more than three hundred nazis fell by your gun

Miss Pavlichenko's well known to fame
Russia's your country, fighting is your game
Your smile shines as bright as any new morning sun
But more than three hundred nazidogs fell by your gun

Fell by your gun, yes,
Fell by your gun
For more than three hundred nazis fell by your gun

In your mountains and canyons quiet as the deer
Down in your bigtrees knowing no fear
You lift up your sight And down comes a hun
And more than three hundred nazidogs fell by your gun

Fell by your gun, yes,
Fell by your gun
For more than three hundred nazis fell by your gun

In your hot summer's heat, in your cold wintery snow,
In all kinds of weather you track down your foe
This world will love your sweet face the same way I've done,
'Cause more than three hundred nazzy hound fell by your gun

Fell by your gun, yes,
Fell by your gun
For more than three hundred nazis fell by your gun

I'd hate to drop in a parachute and land an enemy in your land
If your Soviet people make it so hard on invadin' men

I wouldn't crave to meet that wrong end of such a pretty lady's gun
If her name was Pavlichenko, and mine Three O One

Overall Meaning

Woody Guthrie's ballad "Miss Pavlichenko" praises the achievements of Lyudmila Mykhailivna Pavlichenko, a Ukrainian Soviet sniper who fought in the Red Army during WWII. The song outlines the dangerous conditions and geographical terrain in which Pavlichenko fought, portraying her as a fearless and skilled warrior with a heart-warming smile. The lyrics emphasize Pavlichenko's kills - over 300 Nazis by her gun - as an indication of her dedication and prowess as a soldier. Furthermore, the song suggests that Pavlichenko is a beacon of hope and inspiration for the whole world, representing an anti-fascist movement that will live on for years to come.

Guthrie's song is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it is a rare example of an American folk song celebrating a Soviet hero. At a time when relations between the USA and the USSR were fraught, Guthrie's gesture towards a Soviet sniper represents an attempt to bridge the political gap, advocating for international solidarity against fascism. Indeed, Guthrie was a pacifist and an advocate for civil rights, and his admiration of Pavlichenko might be seen as part of this wider social and political agenda. Moreover, Pavlichenko's story embodies the communist ideal of gender equality, with a woman taking a leading role in a traditionally male sphere, and her record of kills suggests that women are just as capable in combat as men.

In conclusion, "Miss Pavlichenko" by Woody Guthrie is a tribute to a heroic woman who fought against fascism during WWII. Through its lyrics, the song praises Pavlichenko's courage, determination, and skill as a sniper, while also advocating for international solidarity against fascism. Its significance lies in its promotion of gender equality and its attempt to bridge political divides through the power of music.

This is my translation of the 2015 Russian film "Battle for Sevastopol." I do not own the copyright nor do I profit in any way from sharing this film. This is for educational purposes for students of the Russian language and American English.

Battle for Sevastopol is a biographical film about the life of Lyudmila Pavlichenko, one of the Red Army's finest snipers during World War II. She is credited with killing 309 Nazis including some of the Wehrmacht's finest snipers. Lyudmila came to the US as part of a Soviet delegation which was begging for American support in the war, which the US had not yet joined. The 25-year-old sniper famously asked if American men would continue to hide behind her.

Pavlichenko was also a life-long friend of US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The story of their acquaintance is covered in this remarkable film.

Warning: This is a film about WW2. There is violence and adult subject matter.

This isn't about the American people and Russian people, it's about proletarian internationalism. Working class men and women are always grateful to their brothers and sisters in arms.

Yes, congratulations, you can read. Now, since propaganda is a value-neutral term to describe political art, perhaps you would mind positing something like an argument?

@9393zach

Exactly, a victory to one is a victory to us all! Every Nazi that dropped wasn't just another kill for Pavlichencko, but an accomplishment for proletariat worldwide.. never forget that it was COMMUNISM that won the war against the nazis

@toastbusters3897

@@9393zach while I do agree that for the Russian proletariat women who fought in the second world war, every death of a Nazi was a symbol of freedom for these young women and another example of the struggles that they were fighting against, but it certainly wasn't communism as a whole that ended the second world war. It was a mix of both capitalist, socialist, and communist efforts. The whole world fought against the Nazis and sacrificed many brave men and women to end the war. Granted, the Russians were who took Berlin, but that was only one of the three fronts that needed to be taken, and the battle of Berlin could have only been accomplished by the collective allied efforts on Normandy beach. Really, European allies forces from all around worked collectively to end the reign of the Third Reich. It was certainly a global effort. However the politics ragarding everything after the war are very touchy subjects for both sides. I guess my point was that it was the effort of the whole world fighting together for the same cause that ultimately ended the war. Which in itself is something incredible. There were enemy countries who had had political discourse for years working side by side for the same goal. It was truly an incredibly harsh and powerful time for just humanity as a whole.
