MuzikTyme Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 Nirvana's Lake of Fire is undoubtedly my favourite song about where do bad folks go. I'd like to hear others' favourite songs about the lake of fire (hell). ~Lake of Fire~ Where do bad folks go when they die? They don't go to Heaven where the Angels fly. Go to a Lake of Fire and fry. See em' again till the 4th of July. I knew a lady who came from Duluth. Bit by a dog with a rabid tooth. She went to her grave just a little too soon. Flew and laid down on the yellow moon. Where do bad folks go when they die? They don't go to Heaven where the Angels fly. Go to a Lake of Fire and fry. See em' again till the 4th of July. People cry and people moan. Look for a dry place to call their home. Try to find a place to rest their bones. While the Angels and the Devils try to make their own. Where do bad folks go when they die? They don't go to Heaven where the Angels fly. Go to a Lake of Fire and fry. See em' again till the 4th of July. :guitar:
Tenacious_Peaches Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 Muzik, I'm sure you were looking for something deeper, but this catchy little ditty was the first thing that came to my mind... Hell Squirrel Nut Zippers People listen attentively I mean about future calamity I used to think the idea was obsolete Until I heard the old man stamping his feet This is a place where eternally Fire is applied to the body Teeth are extruded and bones are ground And baked into cakes which are passed around In the afterlife You could be headed for the serious strife Now you make the scene all day But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement , job skill and brain And all the things you try to hide Will be revealed on the other side. Now the D and A and the M and the N and the A And the T and the I-O-N Loose your face Loose your name And get fitted for a suit of flames. I always thought Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" was about hell, but it's about love. Insert your own "love is hell" joke here... ::

Elvish Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 What about "Highway to Hell?" Does that count, since it's about the journey?

MindCrime Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 Megadeth - Into the Lungs of Hell Lyrics: ... actually it's an instrumental, so there are no lyrics. Which I guess means it can't really be a song about hell either ::
Danielj Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 My god I dislike the Live version of Hell's Bell's.

cosmosis Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 Slayer's South Of Heaven: An unforseen future nestled somewhere in time. Unsuspecting victims no warnings, no signs. scott Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 MT, I'm sorry to rain on your 'Lake of Fire' but it wasn't actually done by Nirvana, although I like Nirvana's version on their unplugged recording, I gotta give credit where credit is due, the Meat Puppets were the original writers of 'Lake of Fire'
MuzikTyme Posted September 8, 2004 Author Report Posted September 8, 2004 Hey everyone and thanks for the contributions. I'm going to start a thread about hell soon and this one is a great draft for ideas and commentary. Scott, props to you for pointing out what I did not know. I really like the Meat Puppets and wasn't aware they were the originators of The Lake of Fire. Kinda strange that I never heard that version and can't imagine anyone doing it better than Cobain. I must hear the 'Puppets' version now as I'm curious of the difference. I love the lament sound of the guitar's sliding chord structure in Nirvana's version. It sounds like something deep and foreboding. Cobain knows for sure now whether or not it's all true.
scott Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Yeah, I'm pretty sure the original is on Meat Puppets II The Nirvana version is very good though, it's the perfect acoustic song.
MuzikTyme Posted September 9, 2004 Author Report Posted September 9, 2004 Thanks scott. I looked through my collection and only have the Too High to Die CD. It's very good and am wondering why I never got any more of their work. Guess what my next addition will be? :: Anyway, about The Lake of Fire: Obviously, Cobain had a lighthearted attitude concerning it's message but sang and played that song in a way that did it's meaning great justice.
scott Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Yeah, you also have to look at the song in the context of the concert (the obvious one is that there were some Meat Puppets backing Nirvana up) but Cobain had gone on a subtle religous theme for the show (some are obvious like 'Lake of Fire' and 'Jesus Don't Want For A Sunbeam', but then there are little messages 'Man Who Sold The World')
behindblueeyez Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Heaven and Hell by The Who On top of the sky is a place where you go If you've done nothing wrong If you've done nothing wrong And down in the ground is a place where you go If you've been a bad boy If you've been a bad boy Why can't we have eternal life And never die Never die In the place up above you grow feather wings And you fly round and round With a harp singing hymns And down in the ground you grow horns and a tail And you carry a fork And burn away Why can't we have eternal life And never die Never die On top of the sky is a place where you go If you've done nothing wrong If you've done nothing wrong And down in the ground is a place where you go If you've been a bad boy If you've been a bad boy Why can't we have eternal life And never die Never die Never die
scott Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 I checked, and at least according to the songfacts database 'Lake of Fire' is in fact on Meat Puppets II and I'm going to agree with you MT 'Too High To Die' is an excellent album
MuzikTyme Posted September 9, 2004 Author Report Posted September 9, 2004 True. I know there are many who think that Cobain was murdered. I remember back when he was having the problems with heroin and freely admitting that he was trying to commit suicide. I believe his fame overshadowed the seriousness of what was going on at the time and also allowed him certain privileges that the average person would not have had. If I went out here today and tried to commit suicide in front of people or admitted it readily to reporters, I'd be somewhere in a padded room on a 24/7 suicide watch and interviewed constantly by psychiatrists and intervention specialists. He sang his message and cried for help but no one gave it. It's the greatest tragedy in the history of music because his death was intentional, unlike the other icons who in a sense died by their own hands. Not trying to make this a Cobain thread, but if anyone sang about hell it was him. My favourite hard, dark band is no other than Overkill. Here's one of their many songs depicting the ruthfulness of the never ending fire which is the eternity of sorrow. This song has one of my favourite intros of all-time as it is as foreboding and impending as what comes to those that believe not in their heart. It's titled Horroscope on the album by the same name: Critical moments pass, And doctrines of fools will last. I am just trying to cope, Into my horroscope. Through eyes and ears they bleed, Reciting their holy creed. Heeding but one request, The future, is put to, rest... Bless me in darkened days, Down to my knees I pray. I am just trying to cope, Within this horrorscope. In the wake of all frustration, I begin to loose control. Watched as the weapons fired, Bombs burst in the air... Burned in the fields of fire! Standing in the middle of nowhere. Watched as the weapons fired, Baptized in fields of fire! Well, The change in here, an' the future clear. I can feel it coming. So full of hate, its geting late! Yeah, I know its coming. When all the choice turned to just one voice, Yeah, the wind is turning. This is your horrorscope... Words laced with blasphemy, Drip with sincerity. Falling into the plan, Like sacrificial lambs. Hearing the words and said, Rings like nail, to the head. Now I can see the stars, I know we have gone too far. Baptized in fields of fire, Watched as the weapons fired. This is your horrorscope.
MuzikTyme Posted September 9, 2004 Author Report Posted September 9, 2004 There's many songs titled Mother in Law. Which one are you referring to?
