Sour Times Lyrics

[Verse 1]
We're rum and holy water
We're so bad for each other
Too quick to lose your patience
Short-tempered and abrasive
There's just no way to save this

[Pre-Chorus]
And I don't wanna lead you on
I just wanna make it clear
I don't know what song of mine you heard that made you think
I'd want to spend the night with you
Boy, take it easy
Won't spend the night with you, boy

[Chorus]
In these sour times, oh, yeah
Sour times
In these sour times, oh, yeah
Sour times

[Verse 2]
If I'm bein' candid (Yeah, yeah)
I'm rippin' off the bandage (Yeah, yeah)
'Cause I don't want you thinkin' my heart's in the equation
It's crazy that you'd be down to be a fuckin' rebound, no
Ain't even in my right mind, and you think that's a green light
And that just doesn't seem right, no
[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause I don't wanna lead you on
I just wanna make it clear
I don't know what song of mine you heard that made you think
I'd want to spend the night with you
Boy, take it easy
Won't spend the night with you, boy

[Chorus]
In these sour times (In these sour times), oh, yeah
Sour times
In these sour times (In these sour times), oh, yeah
Sour times

[Outro]
Yeah, yeah

Genius Annotation

“Sour Times,” track 11 in Madison Beer’s debut album, is about not allowing herself to be taken advantage of just because she’s going through something.

In an interview with Zach Sang, Madison explained:

Being taken advantage of can mean if you’re in a vulnerable state or you’ve just gone through a breakup or you’re mentally going through something; that also can be a form of being taken advantage of[…] People sometimes see an opportunity and are like ‘Oh this person is at a vulnerable place in their life, I can swoop in and hookup with them or befriend them’, whatever it might be. When I was creating the album, I noticed a lot of people, men in particular, were kind of like, it felt like I was being preyed on[…] The amount of guys who “comfort” you during a breakup and they’re just trying to hookup with you, like, that’s wrong in my opinion. And like it wasn’t a genuine thing, it was clearly like a sexually-driven thing. And I was just like, man that makes me sad[…] So I wrote Sour Times about [how] I’m not gonna hook up with you, or sleep with you, or leave with you, just because I’m going through something.

“Sour Times” was first teased on the Canadian model Charlotte D'Alessio’s tumblr during a Q&A:

my favorite song of Madison’s is called Sour Times & another called Blue

Yes, Beer spoke about that in a February 25, 2021 published article by BuzzFeed:

BuzzFeed:

If you could get one person to listen to your album, who would it be and why?

Madison Beer:

Probably Kevin Parker. “Sour Times” was super inspired by him, so I would love to play it for him and hope he liked it.
