“Von dutch” is the lead single of Charli XCX’s sixth studio album, BRAT, releasing in June 2024. It was produced by EASYFUN and is about embracing being an object of gossip or obsession.
The song was announced a month before its release, which then kicked off its heavy promo campaign including numerous TikTok videos and also Boiler Room set called “PARTY GIRL”.
On 29th January, Charli tweeted list of marketing ideas that ‘'were sent’‘ to her, similiar thing she did in 2020 before announcing her fourth studio album how i’m feeling now. The list contains an acronym 'VD’, which stands for the title, confirmed by actress Rachel Sennott in first of many TikTok videos.
On 3rd February, Charli released first snippet of the single through TikTok and continued using the snippet throughout the month in a series of videos from different occasions such as photoshoots, album listening parties she held for fans, backstage at an award shows and parties she had attended. One video guest starred Charli’s friend, protégé and collaborator Addison Rae, who appears on the remix for Von dutch, that appears on the 7” vinyl.
The song was premiered live on 22nd February, during Charli’s Boiler Room set held in Brooklyn, New York. The event received an astonishing 25,000 RSVPs within the first few hours of the announcement, which is the largest count in Boiler Room history.
The music video was announced three days before it’s release on the same day as the single. It was shot at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport and features Charli running through the airport from a cameraman and also jumping off the wing of an Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger plane.

So, the song’s called ‘Von Dutch’ and I guess it’s kind of about how sometimes you just feel like there are people in the industry, or maybe it’s not even in the industry, this could be like applied to anyone’s life whether they’re working in, you know, our industry or not. But you know how sometimes there’s just those people who you know are fucking watching you. You know they’re watching your every move. You know they’re commenting on it behind your back, probably in a kinda bitchy way, but then they’re so nice to your face and you’re just like what the fuck. They have so much criticism of you and the way that you do things, in almost an obsessive kind of a way. Where it’s like they can’t look away.
Don’t get me wrong, I have had that feeling with other artists in my past, not really right now, but definitely have. I feel like it’s cyclical, it comes around when you’re feeling your strongest and most confident maybe you don’t feel it, anyways whatever.
This song is kind of about that feeling of “ugh, I know you’re fucking watching me”. So if you’re fucking watching, I’m gonna be a fucking star. I feel like everybody has that moment sometimes, when they know people are talking about them, and you’re like fine, fucking talk: I’m that girl, watch me, and you can talk about me more. So this is that, this song is about that.
This voice note was one of five files included on a USB stick available via Charli XCX’s store as merchandise for the release of “Von dutch” and the subsequent “The von dutch remix” with Addison Rae and A. G. Cook.

My use of that brand name was more about the idea of it being this cult classic brand. This thing that people on the internet scramble to get. their hands on. Kind of like me: cult classic baby.
