Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore Lyrics

[Chorus]
Daddy doesn't pray anymore
I guess he's finished talkin' to the Lord

He used to fold his hands and bow his head down to the floor
But daddy doesn't pray anymore

[Verse 1]
I remember even when the times were bad
He thanked Jesus for everything he had

For a good wife and three children and the food upon our plates
Yeah, everything was right when he said grace

[Chorus]
Daddy doesn't pray anymore
I guess he's finished talkin' to the Lord

He used to fold his hands and bow his head down to the floor
But daddy doesn't pray anymore

[Verse 2]
There was a time when we didn't get along
'Cause I thought I was right and he was wrong
Still when I laid down at night I'd hear him get down on his knees
And say a little prayer for me

[Chorus]
Daddy doesn't pray anymore
I guess he's finished talkin' to the Lord

He used to fold his hands and bow his head down to the floor
But daddy doesn't pray anymore
[Interlude]

[Bridge]
Today I followed daddy down to church
And listened to the preacher read God's word
And we sang his favorite hymn but daddy didn't make a sound
And this afternoon we'll lay him in the ground

[Chorus]
Daddy doesn't pray anymore
I guess he's finally walkin' with the Lord
He used to fold his hands and bow his head down to the floor
But daddy doesn't pray anymore

About

Genius Annotation

This song is about Stapleton’s father. Written while his father was living, Stapleton says the decision to perform it came after his death. He recounts the story that inspired the title and lyrics in an interview with Radio.com:

The concept came when Stapleton went to visit his parents for a holiday. He says his dad was a very religious man who said grace at every meal. One particular time, though, he didn’t, and it struck Stapleton. Soon after, the phrase “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore” was stuck in his head.

“I went back to Nashville and wrote that song and just filed it,” he says. “We pulled it back out for this [album]. It was the right time to do it. Just like everything else, there’s a right time for everything, and it was the time to do that. It wouldn’t have made sense for me to do anything with it in 2005. It wouldn’t have meant as much.”

What did Chris Stapleton say about "Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore"?
Genius Answer

I wrote this song in my girlfriend’s (now wife) apartment. It took about ten minutes. I had the idea for maybe a week before. I had been back to east Kentucky to visit my parents and had noticed my Dad didn’t say grace at the dinner table, which he had done without fail every meal my entire life. Maybe it was a momentary lapse of faith or maybe he was just tired. Whichever it was, it gave me the thought, “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore.” For the sake of the song, I thought it was more powerful image if the reason Daddy didn’t pray was that he had passed away. When my Dad passed away in October of 2013 this song came to mean a great deal more to me. I got to hear him say grace many times after I wrote this song. I miss his voice and those words.
