“Cool Girl” is a song first uploaded to dodie’s secondary YouTube channel as a demo on April 10, 2020 as part of ALOSIA. ALOSIA stands for “A Lot of Songs in April.“ In another video posted on her primary channel, doddleoddle, titled “one last time, please – DEMO,” she says:
I’m really bummed I didn’t put [Cool Girl] on [doddleoddle] ‘cause I really like it."
On October 19th, dodie announced that the final version of “Cool Girl” would serve as the first single off her debut album, Build a Problem.

I wrote this during lockdown. It’s more upbeat and poppy and talks about the suppression of one’s needs in order to be lovable. The title references Gone Girl, which is one of my favorite films. I knew I wanted some kind of growth, but I still wanted it to be very gentle. And the best way to do that is to add strings. They were recorded over Zoom and added more depth.
