The Joker And The Queen Lyrics

[Verse 1]
How was I to know? It's a crazy thing
I showed you my hand and you still let me win
And who was I to say that this was meant to be?
The road that was broken brought us together

[Chorus]
And I know you could fall for a thousand kings
And hearts that would give you a diamond ring
When I fold, you see the best in me
The joker and the queen

[Verse 2]
I was upside down from the outside in
You came to the table and you went all in
With a single word and a gentle touch
You turned a moment into forever

[Chorus]
And I know you could fall for a thousand kings
And hearts that could give you a diamond ring
When I fold, you see the best in me
The joker and the queen

[Instrumental Break]

Genius Annotation

“The Joker and the Queen” is the sixth song from Ed Sheeran’s 2021 album = (Equals), which is dedicated to the artist’s wife, Cherry Seaborn, as she’s seen the best in him as a man and decided to stay with him through it all.

Sheeran’s lyrics contain multiple references to monarchy and its terminology, as the singer-songwriter characterizes himself as the joker, and his wife, Cherry, as the queen: this choice could be interpreted as a method to express that they’ve always been different people, even in comparison to each other.

An official remix for the track was released on Febuary 10, 2022 and featured fellow singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

Genius Answer

We’d written “Bad Habits”, and I was like, ‘I think we’re done for the day. I’m not going to put pressure on trying to get another song.’ Then Fred said, ‘I just worked with this guy, [British singer-songwriter] Sam Roman, and he did a piano instrumental that I’ve always thought is really beautiful, but I’ve never been able to write anything over it.’ He played it and honest to god, it was probably 15 to 20 minutes of writing down metaphors and whispering them in. I had the line ‘joker and the queen’, then it was like, ‘I fold, you saw my hand, you let me win, you put the cards on the table.’ I didn’t like this song for a while—in my mind, songwriting is cheating when it’s that easy. Then my brother did a string part and suddenly it sounded like this old classic that had been around since the ‘50s. I fell in love with it.
