Butterflies Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I say stupid things
I get nervous, I talk too much
Just to push the feelings down
But I'm so glad that you turned up
I think it's time that we talked it out

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause it's been five years
Since I saw you and I know we've moved on
And all of my fears ain't goin' nowhere
But I don't wanna run

[Chorus]
From the butterflies, butterflies up in my head
You give me butterflies, butterflies, feel it in my chest

[Verse 2]
You were always calm on the surface
We were both afraid of getting in too deep
You hide it well but you're nervous
I think it's time for some honesty

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause it's been five years
Since I saw you and I know we've moved on
And all of my fears ain't goin' nowhere
But I don't wanna run
[Chorus]
From the butterflies, butterflies up in my head
You give me butterflies, butterflies, feel it in my chest

[Bridge]
No, I could never find the words to say goodbye
But you told me, "Would you hold me tight?"
And I'm not gonna go and mess it up this time
'Cause I know that, that we are just like

[Chorus]
Just like butterflies, butterflies up in my head
You give me butterflies, butterflies, feel it in my chest (Butterflies up in my head)
Just like butterflies, butterflies up in my head
You give me butterflies, butterflies, feel it in my chest (Butterflies up in my head)

[Outro]
(Butterflies up in my head)

Genius Annotation

I think this song is very personal to Florrie and the lyrics seem very straight-forward overall. She used to date George Ezra, but following their split in April 2020, I think she is now moving forward with a new relationship with someone she used to date before. She says the last time she saw this lover, in-person, was 5 years ago which, given the release of the song in 2020, would make their last meet-up in 2015. The relationship may have ended due to Florrie having “messed up” one too many times, but before leaving one another they shared a final hug. Florrie had trouble saying goodbye, but I think they still kept in touch with one another afterwards. Now, I think they are possibly thinking about rekindling their relationship by talking through all of their personal feelings for one another. This theory may come as a bit of a shock to some of her fans – her male fans in particular.
