The Red Shoes [Director’s Cut] Lyrics

[Verse 1]
She move like the diva do
I said, "I'd love to dance like you"
She said, "Just take off my red shoes
Put them on and your dream'll come true

[Pre-Chorus]
"With no words, with no song
You can dance the dream with your body on
And this curve, is your smile
And this cross, is your heart
And this line, is your path
Whoop whoop!

[Chorus 1]
"It's gonna be the way you always thought it would be
But it's gonna be no illusion
It's gonna be the way you always dreamt about it
But it's gonna be really happening

[Post-Chorus]
"Really happening to you
Really happening to you"

[Verse 2]
The minute I put them on
I knew I had done something wrong
All her gifts for the dance had gone
The red shoes, they can't stop dancing
They can't stop!
Can't stop!
Can't stop!
They can't stop!
Whoop whoop!
[Chorus 1]
"It's gonna be the way you always thought it would be
But it's gonna be no illusion
It's gonna be the way you always dreamt about it
But it's gonna be really happening"

[Chorus 2]
She gotta dance, she gotta dance
And she can't stop 'till them shoes come off
These shoes do a kind of voodoo
They're gonna make her dance 'till her legs fall off

[Bridge]
Feel your hair come tumbling down
Feel your feet start kissing the ground
Feel your arms are opening out
And see your eyes are lifted to God
I'm gonna dance the dream
And make the dream come true
I'm gonna dance the dream
And make the dream come true

[Chorus 3]
She gotta dance, she gotta dance, yeah
And she can't stop 'till them shoes come off
These shoes do a kind of voodoo
They're gonna make her dance 'till her legs fall off
Call a doctor, call a priest
They're gonna whip her up like a helicopter
[Post-Chorus]
"Really happening to you
Really happening to you"

[Outro]
Are you ready, shoes?
You gotta dance
You gotta dance, yeah
You gotta dance
You gotta dance, mmm
You gotta dance, mmm
You gotta dance

About

Genius Annotation

“The Red Shoes” is a song originally released as a single for the 1993 album of the same name and featured in the film “The Line, The Cross and the Curve” of the same year. It was later heavily remixed and rereleased as the fifth track from Kate’s first 2011 album Director’s Cut. Much like the rest of the album, the track features many of the original performances but has had new “scenes” and textures added.

It drops in key, like many other songs on the album, by a semi-tone from D to C# major. This was to compensate for the difficulties presented by Kate’s natural voice deepening and allowed her to sing the songs as if they were newly written.
