Genius Annotation

“Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass” is the title track of Lana Del Rey’s first poetry album and is the eleventh song on the album.

The poem was first mentioned by Lana shortly after the release of her Norman fucking Rockwell! single “Venice Bitch”. The singer read the finished version on an Instagram live stream on September 4th, 2019.Afterwards, not much information about the song was revealed apart from her poetry album being named after it.

The poem itself tells the story of Lana contemplating and continuing her thread of leading a wild life by deciding whether or not to make herself happy and go for a night out. Later, the poem takes a twist and has Lana lean towards the idea of family and the beauty and happiness that comes from that, be the answer to her questions.

This is not the first time that Lana has created fantasies of having a family in her work. In 2019, she officially released the song “How To Disappear” as a part of the preceding Norman Fucking Rockwell! album.
