Outer Space is one of two outtakes from The Getaway sessions, the other being Kaly. Both songs were removed from the album very late into development, and wouldn’t see the light of day until a leak six years later.

Outer Space seems to be Anthony reminiscing on his past, specifically his former drug abuse and the death of his best friend Hillel Slovak. “Outer space” may be a metaphor for the feeling of being high, especially on psychedelic drugs such as LSD. The cold lyrics, combined with the subtle instrumentation and haunting backing vocals courtesy of Josh Klinghoffer, make Outer Space a clearer canvas for a story about regret than any other.
