As Thompson later explained, he wrote this song for Sandy Denny. Apparently everyone at her funeral commented on her premature death (she was still just 31) and unrealized potential, but he thought that she had glowed brightly for a while, but had nothing else to give as her creativity was stifled by her alcohol and drugs consumption.
