Delta Dawn Lyrics

[Intro]
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

[Verse]
She's forty-one, and her daddy still calls her baby
All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy

'Cause she walks downtown with her suitcase in her hand
Looking for a mysterious dark haired man
In her younger days, they called her Delta Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
Promised her he'd take her for his bride

[Chorus]
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

[Bridge]
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?
[Chorus]
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky?

About

Genius Annotation

“Delta Dawn” peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in 1972.

This song is actually about the mother of songwriter Alexander Harvey, who had apparently committed suicide after he told her not to attend his performance, because of her drinking problem. The guilt had stuck with him for years, until late one night when he had a vision of his mother nearby, laughing and happy, letting her know it was okay. He started writing the song at that moment, and considers it an apology to her.
