DJ Envy Admits To Blackballing Nicki Minaj

Nicki accused radio of blackballing her on her “Barbie Goin Bad” freestyle.

The Breakfast Club co-host DJ Envy said that he deliberately doesn’t play Nicki Minaj’s music, adding another layer to the long-simmering feud between the radio personality and MC.

Minaj has vented recently about her treatment by radio, specifically on her Apple Music program Queen Radio. On “Barbie Goin Bad,” her freestyle atop Meek Mill and Drake’s “Going Bad” instrumental, she says:

You know radio already tried to blackball a bitch
It’s all good ‘cause when you a legend, when you legendary
You shine no matter what
They get compared to me no matter what
They asked for the GOAT so I came through, bitch

“I thought I was the only one that didn’t play her records,” Envy said after being prompted by Charlamagne Tha God.

Per Vibe, Envy explained his stance on Nicki in 2018, saying that it came from her threatening DJ Self.

“Nicki can have an opinion on Self, Self can have his opinion on Nicki,” he said. “But when you start saying, ‘I got hungry N-words that’s going to come up there,’ nah…You don’t threaten no DJ over his opinion.”

On Twitter, Nicki accused Self of dissing her and being upset when she wouldn’t give him a DJ drop. Self refuted the claim on Instagram.

Though it’s difficult to substantiate the blackballing claim, Minaj’s last album Queen didn’t spawn hit singles in the way that her previous records have. “Chun-Li” reached No. 10, but The Pinkprint, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and Pink Friday all spawned higher charting cuts.

Nicki has dissed her rival Cardi B by accusing her of building her career through “sympathy and payola,” implying that radio stations are being compensated for playing her music.
