Big Boi also appeared to pay homage to his hometown of Atlanta.

Maroon 5 were the halftime headliners at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, with Travis Scott and Big Boi also appearing to perform each of their best-known hits.

The band played a medley of hits like “Sugar” and “Moves Like Jagger,” as well as tracks from their 2002 debut album Songs About Jane, including “This Love” and “Harder to Breathe.”

Scott performed “SICKO MODE,” while Big Boi did a section of his track “I’m On It (Kryptonite)” with Purple Ribbon All Stars before performing “The Way You Move” with Sleepy Brown and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine.

The Maroon 5 decision was controversial from its announcement, with many saying the city should have gone with artists from Atlanta’s rich and storied hip-hop scene. Many prominent Atlanta rappers, including T.I., Migos, Lil Baby, and Ludacris, performed at the Super Bowl Music Fest, which went until the day before the Super Bowl.

Big Boi was added to the slate and released two songs beforehand, the Killer Mike collaboration “Return of the Dope Boi” and “Doin' It” with Sleepy Brown.

The NFL initially reached out to Rihanna to perform, but she rejected the offer due to her support of Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback who has been a lightening rod figure because of his protests during the National Anthem related to America’s history of oppressing people of color.

Genius broke down the meaning behind “SICKO MODE” in the episode of Song Stories below.
