Charlie Puth’s sophomore album Voicenotes is scheduled to arrive on May 11 after a few delays. Today, he shared a new single entitled “Done For Me” featuring Kehlani.
Each singer gives their perspective on a failed relationship on the track. Puth claims he won’t plead for her to stay:
I won’t beg for your love
Won’t say please
I won’t fall to the ground on my knees
You know I’ve given this everything
Baby honestly, baby honestly
In response, Kehlani says she was never in the wrong:
I never cheated
Deleted everyone cause they made you uncomfortable
(No oh, oh baby, no)
These accusations
I can’t apologize for something that I didn’t do
(No oh, oh baby, no)
In a Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe, Puth explained how the 1980s-inspired song came together:
I produced this [record] after an unsuccessful party in L.A., which is what all these records are based off… I have my little Juno keyboard… I just hit one of these settings here and played a B minor chord. It just made me think of Wham! It made me think of 1988. I put that chord down and I immediately thought of Kehlani.
Wham! were a UK dance pop duo founded in 1981 by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. Although the group only lasted until 1986, Wham! sold more than 30 million certified records worldwide and scored a string of worldwide hits. In the U.S., they reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Careless Whisper,” a solo song by Michael also included on Wham!’s 1984 album Make It Big.
Prior to “Done For Me,” Puth shared the album singles “How Long” and “Attention,” the latter of which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
