It comes off his forthcoming album ‘A Love Letter to You 5.’

Trippie Redd is gearing up for the August 4 release of A Love Letter to You 5, the fifth installment of a series that began back in 2017, and today, the Ohio-born rapper and singer has given fans a taste in the form of “Last Days,” a moody burst of night-drive synth-pop that debuted inside the Top 25 of the Genius Top Rap Songs charts.

Produced by Zodiac and Pax, “Last Days” samples “Sextape,” off the rock band Deftones’ 2008 album Diamond Eyes. The first voice we hear belongs to Deftones frontman Chino Moreno, who sings the words “One more time,” a fitting preview for what Trippie is about to deliver.

“Last Days” is about a guy who’s about to leave his girl for unspecified reasons. Maybe he’s getting ready to go on tour or even shuffle off his mortal coil. It could just be they’re just breaking up. As he smokes a blunt and gets intimate with this woman, a crooning Trippie wonders whether this is really the last time he’ll be in this position.

She say, “Rub my body,” I wanna feel your skin
Look me dead in my eyes, can you feel the wind?
Is this the very last time?
I’ma get to—

There’s certainly an air of finality in the second verse, where Trippie ticks off everything in his daily routine like he’s doing it for the last time.

One more drive again, one more fly again
One more day, one more night again
Last time dining in, one last ride again
One last kite, ready to reach my high again

The enigmatic song then ends with the chorus, wherein Trippie fixates on the passage of time. He’s so obsessed with the importance of this fleeting moment that he’s possibly failing to savor it.

One last drank with you, one last night with you
One more time, one more time
Time (Time), time (Time), time
Time (Time), time, time (Time), time
Time (Time), time, time (Time), time
Time (Time), time, time (Time), time
