How to do an in-text citation of a song verse on MLA edition ?

I’m currently amidst writing a research project and in his lectures, the professor forgot to mention how to cite a song, i still have 3 weeks before the research proposal and i was wondering if someone underwent the same quagmire ? if so i need ur help ! i want both in-text citation of a guest verse of Eminem on jay-z’s renegade and a citation on “ list of cited works ”

I use “Artist, Name Song, Release Date, Link to the Lyrics” but I don’t know if there’s a hard rule for it tbh.

I know there are some academics among the eds and mods so @genius-editorial-board does anyone have an idea here?

What citation style does the teacher want? Best place for all of that online is Purdue OWL (which is an acronym for Online Writing Lab). Under MLA stule, for example, music and songs are in the “Other Sources” section of citation format.

It also depends upon what you want to cite: a song would be different than citing Genius itself.

I second @poeticimmunity , Purdue OWL will likely have it. I unfortunately don’t know it off the top of my head as I use Chicago, but looking at their page here it looks like it’s dependent on where you accessed the song. Hope this helps!

@Tossing_Dice that’s the reference in the List of Cited Works, i only want the IN-TEXT CITATION after i finish the lyrics i don’t exactly know what to write between the parenthesis ( renegade ) or ( eminem, renegade ) or ( jay-z ft. eminem – renegade ) i’m finna perplexed.

@Tossing_Dice I realize this is quite a bit later, but what’s the format for citing, say, a book? If it’s (Author, work) (or whatever the format may be) I would think the safest bet would be to mirror that but for the song – so with my example, (eminem, “Renegade”). I don’t know the nature of your proposal, but in my experience most professors are happy as long as you’re consistent in how you cite.

@emarshall19946 The IN-TEXT CITATION aspect of documentation is also covered at Purdue Owl. Since you haven’t even bothered to identify the documentation style you are looking for, you might provide some actual helpful information before getting uppity, since you point-blank asked how to construct

a citation on “ list of cited works ”

You also could try something revolutionary, like asking the professor. You said you had three weeks. Pretty sure that gives you plenty of time to send an e-mail and get a response.
