If I was your mother
Would you let me hold your hand
Would you say you were my baby
Would you always be my friend
If I was your mother
Could I teach you what's right
Could I tell you stories, maybe tuck you in
And kiss you sweet goodnight

Tell me what I got to do
To make my life mean more to you
I could get so close it's true
If I was your mother
Would you always believe me
'cause I'd wake up in the middle of the night
Just to see if you need me
Tell me there's no other
To who you're telling secrets
And would you tell me 'bout all the boys
You been bringing home to meet me

Tell me what I got to do
To make my life mean more to you
I could get so close it's true
If I was your
Tell me who I got to be
To make you a part of me
There's no one else you'll ever need
If I was your mother, mother
If I was your mother, mother

When love is blood you're never on trial
It don't get deeper than a mother and child
Oh, baby I got to get that close to you

Tell me what I got to do
To make my life mean more to you
I could get so close it's true
If I was yours
Tell me who I got to be
To make you a part of me
There's no one else you'd ever need
If I was your mother, mother
If I was your mother, mother
Yeah
If I was your mother, mother
If I was your mother, mother
If I was your mother, mother

If I was your mother, mother [Repeat: x6]

Jon & Richie actually explained in an interview that this song is about a relationship, and it's gone so haywire that it's almost become an obsession for either one of the person in the relationship. Jon asks "If I was your mother, would you let me..." because you can't get closer to someone until you've given BIRTH to them. So it's a pretty twisted song, but I love it! :D

Shouldn't it be "if I were..."?

I've always found this song incredibly unnerving, much as I love the band and the "Keep The Faith" album.

It's about being close to someone. Like a mother and child. I think JBJ was trying to put the point across on the album. He used being as close as the Holy Ghost on Bed of Roses.

It is a rather disturbing song, I agree....but still good.

Dude! Disturbing? It's great! It is so heavy! The chords in the beginning, the way it starts! Groovy!

i thought it was pretty obvious. the song is to jon's daughter, who was just born at the time ( mid 90's) look at the lyrics: "Would you always believe me, 'Cause I'd wake up in the middle Of the night Just to see if you need me"

"would you tell me 'Bout all the boys you been Bringing home to meet me"- its to his little girl. sweet :-)

Thank you jmg21!! I was always put off from this song. And I never really liked it because I didn't understand. But what you said makes perfect sense! Sadly, my worst quality is that I can't read deep into songs at all. I hate it. So thank you very much. I can enjoy the song now :)

Actually, Jon himself said in an interview that is about being so crazy with love that you want to be closer than just a husband or boyfriend could ever be. What could be closer to somebody than their own mother!
