I've been the needle and the thread
Weaving figure eights and circles around your head
I try to laugh but cry instead
Patiently wait to hear the words you've never said

Fumbling through your dresser drawer
Forgot what I was looking for
Try to guide me in the right direction
Making use of all this time
Keeping everything inside
Close my eyes and listen to you cry

I'm lifting you up
I'm letting you down
I'm dancing till dawn
I'm fooling around
I'm not giving up
I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we must get out

"This is not goodbye," she said
"It's just time for me to rest my head"
She does not walk, she runs instead
Down these jagged streets and into my bed

When I was fumbling through your dresser drawer
Forgot what I was looking for
Try to guide me in the right direction
Making use of all this time
Keeping everything inside
Close my eyes and listen to you cry

I'm lifting you up
I'm letting you down
I'm dancing till dawn
I'm fooling around
I'm not giving up
I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we must get out

There's only so much I can do for you
After all of the things you've put me through

I'm lifting you up
I'm letting you down
I'm dancing till dawn
I'm fooling around
I'm not giving up
I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we must get out

I'm lifting you up
I'm letting you down
I'm dancing till dawn
I'm fooling around
I'm not giving up
I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we must get out

I'm lifting you up (oh oh)
I'm letting you down (oh oh)
I'm dancing till dawn (oh oh)
I'm fooling around (oh oh)
I'm not giving up (oh oh)
I'm making your love (oh oh)
This city's made us crazy and we must get out (oh oh)

awww i love this song. my dad loves it too. i think he just really confuses her, and he doesn't know why. he does stuff that makes her want to leave, but she can't. she always comes back to him. and he really hates that he makes her feel this way. i wonder what "city" he's talking about. los angeles, perhaps? ;) i love the music, too. so gentle. you can see that he's pleading with her. poor jane.

To me it sounds like a relationship that is falling apart from both sides. They still love eachother to a certain degree, and can't let go. They keep trying to make it work even though they know it won't. He is cheating on her, but still loves her, he just feels that it is hopeless at this point. He can't seem to talk to her. He listens to her cry and doesn't know what to do. He knows the relationship is falling apart, and that neither of them are happy, but even though he fools around on her he still loves her and it hurts to think that she might be doing the same, so he is going through her dresser to see if he can discover anything. He doesn't want to give up, he even blames it on the city (even though that probably has nothing to do with it really) but in the end it will probably fall apart. It is depressing.

I don't see why you think he's cheating on her in this song. I think that he wants her and she won't succumb. Even though she wants him, just maybe not to the extent he wants her. "She does not walk she runs instead, down these jagged streets and into my bed"... My favorite line.

Simply co-dependence. They each play mindgames, drive each other up each other's proverbial walls, whether it be when arguing or during the reconciliation! ^_~

It's all ups and downs, on-again and off-again. She runs away when he gets close and possibly vice-versa but it's more likely she plays the guilt-trip games with one-sided screaming matches and tears when she doesn't get her way. She's complex, damaged (She Will Be Loved) and just impossible to get along with. She's only happy when they're getting back together and the period before their breaking-up so he does these things subconsciously to make her happy with him again. It's just that the breaking-up part is in between. He seems to forget this fact and instead blames their location on their situation as it's something tangible rather than the games they play with each others' minds. shrug

Well, that's what I hear. She's insecure, he's insecure, they inflict their self-proposed inadequacies upon each other, despising and resenting the other for the exact same thing they're doing to each other. Round and around, like a washing machine. Vicious cycle, yet they're stuck in it. Must get out!

I think its about a guy and girl who have feelings for eachother and they are intimate but aren't really open with their feelings for eachother.

Ive been the needle and the thread Weaving figure eights and circles round your head I try to laugh but cry instead Patiently wait to hear the words youve never said

She can't figure him out because they have been playing games with eachother the whole time, trying to keep it light even though they both really like each other. He is waiting to hear her say she cares for him, but she doesnt because she has no clue what is going on in his head and hes not really letting her know.

Fumbling through your dresser door forgot what I was looking for Try to guide me in the right direction Making use of all this time Keeping everything inside Close my eyes and listen to you cry

talking about her dresser drawer just makes it obvious that they are intimate. He is going through her things for some reason or another...seems like hes looking in her stuff to see who she really is. They had kept things light and airy, a fling, because she had already planned on leaving before they even met (whether it was a job opportunity or something else). They both realize they love each other but the relationship has started at such an awkward time for both of them.

Im lifting you up Im letting you down Im dancing til dawn Im fooling around Im not giving up Im making your love This citys made us crazy and we must get out

He is making the best of their time together. He wants it to be the best it can be, bittersweet. he says hes letting her down because he won't be completely open with her about how he feels. he wants her to make the decision to stay on her own. He would go with her if he could but its not his decision to make

This not goodbye she said It is just time for me to rest my head She does not walk she runs instead Down these jagged streets and into my bed

She is trying to figure out what she wants. If her career or elsewise is more important than this unexpected love. She leaves, but comes back....running. Realizing being with him is more important.

    same as before

Im lifting you up Im letting you down Im dancing til dawn Im fooling around Im not giving up Im making your love This citys made us crazy and we must get out

    same

Theres only so much I can do for you After all of the things you put me through

He is surprised that she decided to leave him and it really threw him for a loop. He is afraid now that she is back because they went through this whirl wind of feelings and doesnt want to go through it again. he hopes she is there for good.

    My Interpretation

This song is about an actual moment in his relationship with the girl where he's going through her dress drawer and his thoughts on the relationship.

The needle and the thread means that he has tried leading and/or following her lead, but it all ends up confusing her instead, the push/pull of a relationship. He wants to laugh but cries because she can fix this all just by saying "I love you" but because she doesn't, it seems more likely she would say "let's break up" instead.

Fumbling through her dresser drawer and forgetting what's he is looking for, is probably a situation where they were arguing about something missing, which became a bigger arguement because of their bad relationship, they both realise this in the moment and reflect on it.

I'm lifting you up, letting you down.. etc. Are things she said to him, contradicting lines that echoes in his, her insecurities assuming he is out clubbing and seeing other girls.

"This is not goodbye", "it's just time for me to rest my head" is what she says to him when he started crying in the beginning. He then remembers the bitter sweet memory of their relationship, her running down the jagged street.

    The timeline:

    • They argue about something small that escalated due to their bad relationship.
    • He gets angry, but holds it in and hears her cry in the background.
    • (Inferred they have a serious conversation about their relationship.)
    • She concludes by telling him "this is not goodbye" "it is just time for me to rest my head" -(he reflects on everything that has lead to this point, from the sweet beginning of her running to his bed to the bad breakup.) -He thinks about how he tried everything, needle and the thread. -he thinks about all the contradicting things she said he does, (I'm lifting you up, letting you down, etc) and asks to leave the city.
    • he has done everything, but he cannot leave the city. End of timeline.

I love Maroon 5 and this is my favorite Maroon 5 song. They just played at my college (Gettysburg) and they were awesome. They put on a great show. Their encore was a cover of "Highway to Hell" and it rocked. As far as this song, I think it's cool how he seems like no matter what he does, he just cofuses her, but she can't bring herself to leave. You gotta go see these guys in concert, they're awesome!!!!
