Eighteen Yellow Roses

This is a song of every girl's father... There comes a point in time, when Daddy has to let go of his baby girl, and it is probablly the most difficult moment in his life. In this song, the Daddy is taken by surprise, when he unexpectedly finds a florist with flowers for his daughter... and then realises that the time has probably come for him to let go.There is nothing left for him to do, But ask to meet the boy that's done this thing And find out if he's got plans to buy you a ring. Daddy has his reservations about ANY relationship that his daughter would get into, because eighteen yellow roses will wilt and die one day ... yet, he reminds his daughter, that a father's love will never fade away. I recall my father's emotions and feelings when my wedding day was approaching - and the day that i got married... and i can certainly relate to this song.

i am in love with this song at the minute. it seems fully apropriate of my life aswell. i've been with my boyfriend for seven months now, and it's really serious, but he hasn't yet met my dad. my dad still treats me as if i'm 10, and still calls me princess and things on the phone, which i still love, but he'll soon have to start realising i have to grow up - and already have.

daddy will always be the number one man in my life though :-)

i think i might play him this song, and tell him i think he should listen to it and think about it.

Bobby's melancholy tone has always made me feel that the roses are announcing the birth of a grandchild. The father feels no joy as the daughter isnt married. Beautiful song.

I've always wondered who's singing the song...don't think a father would say "I never doubted your love for a minute, I always thought that you would be true..." Only a wronged lover would say that, yes...?

And the words " though you belong to another, etc..." who's saying that? Surely not the father?! Something here is very confusing to me...anyone have an explanation?

As the father of a daughter I cannot hear this damn song without tearing up. One of the best ever to catch the emotions EVERY father feels as his little girl grows up.

I sang this song on Brian Hendersons Australian Bandstand about 1962 and I thought that the Yellow Roses meant that his daughter was pregnant! ('the boy that's done this thing".) It probably means that I should have researched it more. By the way, that show was the first TV appearance of the BG's! Jimmy Stewart. (Still alive at 77) thanks

18- legal age for marrying without parental consent; yellow roses=possibly Harrison's rose (Texas); wedding ring= father's hope that the boy who's done this thing (pregnancy) is man enough to do the right thing (wedding ring); father always that girl would be "true" (virginal, married by paternal consent,) "now there's only one thing left for me [Dad] to do (meet the boy). Yep- even so, Dad will "stand by" his daughter.
