Twisting By The Pool Lyrics

We're going on a holiday now
Gonna take a villa, a small chalet
On the Costa del Magnifico
Where the cost of living is so low
Yeah, we're gonna be so neat
Dance to the Eurobeat
Yeah, we're gonna be so cool
Twisting by the pool

Sitting in a small cafe now
Swing, swing, swingin to the cabaret
You wanna see a movie, take in a show now
Meet new people at the disco
Yeah, we're gonna be so neat
Dance to the Eurobeat
Yeah, we're gonna be so cool
Twisting by the pool

And we can stil get information
Reading all about inflation
And you're never gonna be out of reach
There's a call-box on the beach

Mmm, you're gonna look so cute
Sunglasses and bathing suites
Be the baby of my dreams
Like the ladies in the magazine
Yeah, we're gonna be so neat
Dance to the Eurobeat
Yeah, we're gonna be so cool
Twisting by the pool

I'm a twisting fool
Just twisting, yeah twisting
Twisting by the pool

Actually Knopfler wrote this song as a reaction to what was being said about their Love Over Gold album, particularly that Telegraph Road was a masterpiece. Knopfler maintained that DS was just a rock\'n\'roll band and he wrote this simple song in that tradition. It is a fun song and it doesn\'t pretend to be in the same class as the classic Telegraph Road or Brothers in Arms songs. Taken in that context the song is fine and fun to listen to.

Chris, I always figured that this song was written for some reason like the one you stated.

Still, this song - and its inclusion in their compilation album - makes me want to kick puppies.

chrisb1 thanks for the info this songs reminds me of Walk of life

Yeah, I totally agree!! And of course this is not 'Sultans of Swing', but it's a nice song to listen and dance, and also very fun - sarcasm can be fun.

Well, I wanted to talk about this one for long. In a classical 1983 Tokyo performance, Mark explains the meaning. It's one of that classical topic: the song about jerks or stupid guys, as the likes of Heavy fuel, Money for nothing, El macho... you know. He imitates the tone of the typical trendy guy who says "let's go twisting by the pool"... the word in spanich is "pijo". A boasty, over trendy guy. The guy who would do the Eurobeat, and yes! be interested on the Inflation and the stock karket, or at least pretend he is. I always thought it was just a simple R&R song, with nothing more to it, but one way or another, every song by MK that sounds too light has something behind. I don't think it has much to do with bother on how people took Telegraph Road, (that BTW is probably their best and an all time classical). I don't see Mark doing a song to specifically show anything: he really gives always proof of doing whatever he feels like doing! Cheers to all!

Yes, surely not one of their best. But I think that it should not only be pointed out that this is not only a tribute to 1960s rock n' roll [specifically surf rock], it is a sarcastic one.

To me, the references to going to the disco and reading about inflation suggests the late 70s Carter presidency era. But the inflation doesn't really matter to the "characters" in the song, as long as they can use a call box to contact their stock brokers.

In addition, they dance to Eurobeat, a genre of music Dire Straits was certainly never a part of, which caught on among kids vacationing in Greece and Italy [i.e. rich people].

To get to my point, I think this song is contrasting the audience that was drawn to the Beach Boys and other pop-rock bands [middle class white kids] and the twisters by the pool [vapid rich white kids].
