Midnight Lyrics
Still I'm awfully glad I came
Resonating in the shape of things to come
Never waiting when I know there's only one
No one ever thinks they're cured
Just a minute while I reinvent myself
Make it up and then I take it off the shelf
Over the laws of light
Over the moon by midnight
Let's do it all this time
Everyone wishing well we go
Everyone knows anything goes
We are the lotus kids
Better take note of this
For the story
The blood of scorpios a nine
Like the fear that's in the eyes of every doe
Say it now cause John and Jane would like to know
Songs to serenade the dead
All along I said I know no enemies
Mix it up until there are no pedigrees
Over the ocean so wide
Let's do it all this time
Everyone wishing well we go

I just finished reading Anthony Keidis' autobiography Scar Tissue, in which he battled drug abuse and addiction. in the writing stages of By the Way he had finally settled his life and found sobriety, but he still felt the urges of turning back. The closest time he came to relapsing was one night when he decided to drive to downtown LA, buy some drugs, and get fucked up. Just as he was leaving he looked up and saw the full moon glowing above him and realized he wasn't about to let go of his life and go through all that pain of losing everything yet another time. He then turned back and stayed home. Who knows, it could have been Midnight. This song definetly seems to have elements of his addictions and pains in it. Just my two cents.
By the way, before I read Scar Tissue I read a good book called A Million Little Peices written by James Frey. I thought it was a powerful novel despite the media criticism. However, reading Anthony's work in Scar Tissue was by far more an emotionally powerful book. It was difficult to read because it was so accessible for me or anyone to relate to. It had an astonishing greater effect on my life than Frey's book. Even a month after reading it, I can't stop thinking about Anthony's life story. Highly recomended to anyone, fans of the band or not.

Second most beautiful song on By The Way (behind "I Could Die For You").
I think this is the most beautiful song on the album but i'll agree that I Could Die For You is close behind :)

yea it could be about marriage, "the rising moon is on the shine.." could be just about change and awaiting for that change. which something like marriage brings, or going away to college, or just moving away from a past relationship which when anthony was working on this album, he just broke up with a love. or thats what i remember, please correct me if im wrong.

This is one of the best songs on the almbum.Anyone know what or who he is talking about when he says "we are the lotus kids"?

Hey, Woody87, what I can say, as a Greek is the lotus is a fruit. In ancient mythology, this fruit used to grow in one specific place. If anyone went there and ate lotus, he would forget his family and friends and stay there forever.I don't know how this could be related to the song, however. (Maybe they want to forget something?)
Dude you'r absolutely right about the lotus thing but if it's truly about getting married then why he would write something like that?

mabey he wants to fotget about all his bad desicions (refering to drung abuse)and run away with a women he can really have a noraml life with, and when he says "things will never be the same, still im awfly glad i came" hes saying that life is better and hes happy he made these desicions, also when he says "knowone ever thinks theyre cure", hes saying that he still feels like hes stuck in a hell hole and a drug addiction world, also when he says "over the laws of light over the moon by midnightlets do it all this...

Hold on.
Guys, they weren't born in the 70s.
They released their first CD in 1984.

"over the laws of light over the moon by midnight"
people say that we always jump to drugs in the meanings of chili peppers songs... but you cant get around that! i mean come on, even if it were just mary j, its still 'over the laws' and gets you 'over the moon.'
im sure there's more to the song, and i'd like to find out, but there's definitely some drug references

Also, I just wanted to say that this is easily one of the Chilis most complicatied songs on this CD, simply because of Midnight's ending; the way which they tie in the instrumental at the beginning to the last parts of the song, as Anthony sings Midnight's haunting chorus 3 extra times is absolutely amazing; gives me an orgasm everytime

Yo its cool.. I kinda didn't like it how they ventured of from there funk shit and how they use weird effects, but 'By the Way' the album and its songs are definitely growing on me. Kinda talks about how there career might be winding down. How they have settled down since there previous albums (aka Blood Sugar Sex Magik) and how there gonna stay the way they are cuz they know who they are they aren't gonna change it. Thats what I love bout them. Cheese nice comment, It really makes me want to read Scar Tissue now!!!. And kamakazi all of the RHCP songs give me orgasm's. :-P

Incredible song:) I always thought "Over the laws of light Over the moon by midnight" had something to do with cities. When you flie over a city at midnight, it's practically a lawn of light. Also, lawns of light may have something to do with star fields, since he also sings about Scorpio and the Greek Muse's.
Complecated song, I'd love to know the meaning.
